It is generally assumed that Israel has nuclear weapons, but there has never been any proof of it being so. I personally believe that they do not have any. But by implying through others that they do is enough for any Arab country to think twice about war with Israel.

In some ways it is a double standard as is the fact that we have nuclear weapons too. Israel is our ally and the leaders of Iran are belligerent and don't really like the USA. Iran 's president is a dangerous man. We would only use our nuclear weapons as a last resort to defend our country. As far as I know, Israel poses no threat to us, but they have been fighting over the Gaza Strip and who it belongs to for years with the Palestinians.

Iran wants to wipe Isreal and the U.S. off the face of the map. He has said this. It is in every democracy's best interest to stop Iran from having a nuclear weapon. He is a dangerous man.

No ! Because having Nuclear Weapons means a lot of power & as you are more powerfull means : more responsibilty & respect for others , and that is not the case with the countries like Iran, Iraq, N.Korea, Pakistan etc. to name the few ! As these are (or never were ) STABLE DEMOCRACIES & there is no hope in the future also ! In my opinion the Nukes should be for your self defence & respect and they should serve as DETTARENT rather than weapons of mass destruction !!

It is a double standard but Iran is unstable and considered to sponsor terrorism. Israel only acts in self-defense when it strikes other nations, such as Syria and other Arab countries that pose a threat to Israel.
The problem with countries obtaining nukes is that it could cause a domino effect per se of other countries seeking nukes. Add to that the fact that many of these countries are unstable and that could lead to the nukes falling into the hands of radicals or terrorists who may use the nukes the maintain whatever position of power they are able to achieve.

Is Iran democrat style governement like Isreal ? is it not a double standard for people in those two countries?: one has a dictatorship and one has a democracy where Arabs who wish to live in peace can be citizens and vote >?

Isreal needs to have it because half a dozen arab muslim countires have sworn to destroy Isreal, I do not hear the Isreali's saying them same about Islam.

I don't see Israel threatening to wipe Iran of the face of the Earth!

I don't see Israel sponsoring Jewish Fundamentalists to launch suicide attacks in Iran.

I don't see Israel sponsoring terrorism in non-Jewish countries.

Israel has always followed a policy of Defence.

Iran on the other hand has its fingers in many pies including the de-stabilization of Lebanon.

Many US Allies have Nuclear weapons and belong to the non-Nuclear proliferation treaty, a country ran by Religious fanatics cant be trusted not to use the weapon on people they class as non-believers, be they Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Hindi etc.. etc..

Double Standard? No. Israel doesn't advocate the violent overthrow of another sovereign country's government and the eradication of that country's civilian population. Iran does. In fact, Iran has PUBLICLY stated they intend to attack Israel if given the chance and DO advocate the killing of Israeli women and children. Let's dispense with formalities and call Iran exactly what it is; a rogue nation hell bent on the absolute destruction of the Israeli people. (I'm an American Christian, by the way, so don't make the mistake of thinking I'm an Israeli or Jewish person trying to defend Israel).

And for those of you who are quick to condemn the United States for posessing nukes AND for being the only nation to use them in war time I say this: read your history books and learn WHY we dropped the bombs. Japan was preparing for an "every man woman and child" defense of the home islands. The Japanese war lords were still firmly in control of the government before we dropped the nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Dropping the bombs forced the Emperor to intervene and sue for peace and saved thousands of Japanese lives, not to mention hundreds of thousands of American and allied casualties that would have resulted from a mainland Japan invasion. And since we invented the atomic bomb in order to keep the Japanese and Germans from doing so in WWII, what would you have us do now, un-invent it and let our enemies have it? Do you realistically think other nations will give up the bomb if we do?

I personally worked with nuclear weapons in the military, ...I've been to the bomb sites in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the things I saw and experienced there moved me to tears, not due to guilt but due to pity. Japan paid a heavy price for her aggressive expansionist doctrine in the early 20th century.

I'm sure I'll get a number of thumbs down for this answer, but I'm sick of seeing the US and our allies bashed for doing what was best at the time to defend our ways of life. I'm also sick of the arabic world who have all proclaimed their dedication to the absolute extinction of the Israeli state and people. Israel is our ally and a darned good one at that. I would fight to defend Israel and any other nation and people who advocate freedom and justice as their guiding principles just as fervently as I would to defend this country from attack and there are others in this country that feel the same.

Here's the thing...

Whether or not it is a double standard is a question asked from the point of view of the smaller picture. Yes, we have nuclear weapons and have for some time. Yes, Israel has them and has for some time. Some of the material used to build their first warheads was supplied to them by the U.S. How many nuclear weapons has France built in the last decade? Do we know? Do we care? Of course not, because we don't see France as a credible threat to our nation, or its 'concerns'.

Israel, on the other had is one of our most powerful Allies in that region of the world. They were NOT the first ones to introduce nuclear weapons in that region, we were. We stored them in Saudi Arabia in the 1950's in Dharan, and with the Mediteranean Sixth Fleet. Israel's first strategic missiles, introduced in 1973, the Jericho I, can hit places like Syria... In 1990, Israel introduced the Jericho II, which has a longer range, and can hit places like, let's say, Iran. Israel has repeadtedly sworn to use these weapons in a defensive manner only, and have yet to PUBLICLY threaten to use them offensively.

Iran's government, as some of the others have mentioned, HAS threatened to use these weapons....to attack Israel. What do you think we'd do if they threatened to use them against one of our European NATO allies...like Great Britain, for example. We wouldn't be having this discussion, would we? We'd be in a very long, costly war in a Russian supplied Iran. Defending our English brothers, as they have done for us, as is our obligation. In this case, they've threatened Israel, a much more pivotal ally than many may realize...

So of course we're going to step in... Not because it is fair, or just, or right. Rather, we do it because it is in our best interests to prevent Iran from obtaining the ability to carry out their pledge. Double standard suggests some element of balance here. There is none. We are the more powerfull nation, doing what powerfull nations do; influencing smaller, less powerfull nations. Nothing new there.

As far as the WWIII comment from GWB, well, I wouldn't put too much stock into what you are told, as a citizen of this nation. I know...we pay his salary, but that's not how he sees us, I assure you. If his administration can create the perception of fear, he can gain support should he need to lean on Iran, or possibly take action. Iran can't hit us. They lack the rocket technology, just like North Korea, so don't worry, you're safe. (Oh...and the Patriot ABM is worthless) So if anything is going to save us from a World War with the use of Nuclear weapons, it's the Israeli-built Arrow ABM, so we should probably back Israel, for now. Once again, it's in our BEST INTERESTS, regardless of what it means for Iran. I know that probably sounds heartless and cold, but our world is much smaller now, and soon we may all have to fight for water, food, land, and fossil fuels.

About what you said regarding Israel's limelight as of late:

Keep in mind that Mossad, Aman, and Shin Bet are VERY good at what they do. They've had allot of practice, remember? So they might be planning and carrying out all forms of operations without our ever hearing about it, right?

During the recent Operation Orchard, Israeli commandos were so close to the Syrian enrichment facility that they were able to target it with a laser designator. This was no small trip over the border, either. =) So we simpy have no idea what Israel will do with weapons no one knows about, especially ones we GIVE them, produced with untracable North African material. No more of that Savanah River stuff, lol. They could detonate something like that in Baghdad, and make it look like Iran did it. Or detonate it on their own soil, and blame Hezbolah... See what kind of Crusade against Radical Islam could start there? The state of Iran could cease to exist when the dust from that storm clears.

Israel is a stable democracy, Iran is not. Intelligience says that Israel has had nukes since the 70s and they have not used them yet. They took risks in Iraq in 1981 and this year in Syria. Why didn't they use nukes? Because Israel does not subscribe to a policy of death to arabs. Iran does have a policy of death to jews.

Understand the obvious?
