The Scope's Monkey Trial was a test case to see how the court system would rule on the teaching of evolution in public schools. Mr. Scopes was the teacher, on trial, for teaching evolution instead of the traditional creationism. The court ruled against Mr. Scopes and gave him a small fine. If you ever get the chance to see or read the play "Inherit the Wind", It was very good.

John Scopes, High School teacher in Tennessee, taught Darwin's theory of evolution, contradicting a Tennessee law prohibiting the teaching of evolution. However, he may never have taught it and it was in a state approved textbook. It was also known as the Monkey Trial. It turned into more of a trial to lampoon conservative Christian fundamentalists and discredit the bible.
