I live in Chicago but i have this obsession to go surfing on Lake Michigan...except the waves are always too small.....and the only time they get big is in the winter..... and it's seriously one of my life goals to catch a huge wave on lake Michigan....is this impossible and i should just stop trying or can you suggest anything?

Yes - I've seen people on Lake Michigan on the Michigan side surfing in the summer, but fall is the best time.

They are an hour east of Chicago -- located in New Buffalo Michigan. They'll tell you where to go. They also say that the best places are near man-made structures such as breakwalls, jetties, and piers.

Here's another article about good places in Michigan - including Grand Haven, Muskegon, Holland, South Haven

Its hard to surf in chicago. You need a strong east wind to get the waves up, which hardly happens. Come down to the Indiana Dunes State Park in late summer or early autumn. The north winds are strongest then, and the waves can get 6 feet or higher. Also, There's an independent movie call "Unsalted" Its all about surfing the great lakes.

There is a place North of you called Shiboigan, Wisconsin, they surf there, so I guess the answer is yes, you can surf on Lake Michigan, just watch for when the wind is blowing from the East and you should have good surf.

It is possible to surf Lake Michigan. The waves are small though and since its not salt water the paddling / floating is not the same.

the surf video Step into Liquid has a whole chapter on lake surfing. You should check that out. They're out there in warm weather but don't expect huge waves.
