Their God likes human sacrifice for some reason. He doesn't think anyone should be forgiven for how he made them unless his son suffers and dies and spends a few days in hell. I'm not sure why they would worship someone like that.

I usually catch flak for answering in this topic, but here goes.
God did not defend Jesus at the time of his execution because Jesus was sent to the earth for the express purpose of teaching the gospel and being martyred in His father's stead. Ironic for a story from a text that praises self-sacrifice. In short, Christendom was built on the apostles teaching what they had learned and testifying that founder of the faith had been risen from the dead. Thei component of faith would not have occured had He not been killed. His crucifiction would not have occurred without the 'betrayal' of Judas. Some believe that Jesus sent Judas to the authorities for the purpose of being captured and executed. This makes sense if you believe that God is omniscient. He is described as knowing all that was, all that is, and all that will be. Therefore, God knew what would happen when Jesus reached that exact moment in time. Jesus wasn't protected, because He was sent to be killed. Its a rougher than usual description, but it pretty much sums it up.
PS
Jesus was a rabbi. So if we follow His teachings...shouldn't we be practicing the Hebrew customs?

Booles, first of all, "how he made us" is not how we are now. Adam sinned, and with him all of his descendants. If he hadn't have sinned, Jesus wouldn't had to have died. And it's far worse what Jesus endured than "a few days in Hell". He suffered the weight of all the world's sin, and all of God's wrath. Not to mention that heaven and hell most likely exist out of time, so time is irrelevant. And he doesn't like human sacrifices, he wants us to sacrifice our hearts to him. Live for him, because he is Holy and perfect, and deserves no less.
To answer your question, Jesus was not "killed". He willingly gave his life up. And God certainly could have defended him; that's what they mocked him for on the cross. But if he had, then we would all still be doomed to hell. But instead, his death satisfied God's holy wrath, and offered us sinners a way to repent (even if everyone doesn't take it.)

Christ was supposed to be the sacrificial lamb. His dying was the point.
