I hope a kid who has a healthy interest in sports did not go to see this nerd film Golden Compass.
This just makes me sick that kids would see a fantasy movie. What do fantasy movies offer?

I think that dust in the Golden Compass is sin. As near as I can tell. What the view of the man and his demon near the beginning of the movie did for me was show me that there was an attempt to prove that men could live fine with sin. As the dust was trailing through both man and demon.
That really seems to be it. I just saw the movie, so I am thinking about it more. I might be wrong about dust, but so far I don't think so.

i took a political science class for college units at my university. we had a lot of debates about really hot issues. issues such as, abortion, death penalty, legalization of marijuana, ect. if you are very passionate about what you believe in, you tend to come off as being mad, or ignorant. my teacher said that EVERY SINGLE PERSON has a different opinion and view. whether it's from a personal level, through experience, or something involving a family memeber or friend. there is nothing wrong with being passionate and beliveing in your view. though a lot of people, don't have an open mind, and don't care to listen to the other side. some people's views change. when you get older, and go through things in life, your views can quite possibly change, or they probably won't. it all depends on the view and what your strong opinion is:]

"dust" represents knowledge of the universe that is within all of us. The Church in the movie does not want people to have knowledge b/c the church will not be able to control the people once they realize that the church is truly evil. It's not unlike what goes on today - religion even says that the name of the tree eve ate the apple off of was the tree of knowledge... kind of strange that she was seeking to take in knowledge and according to religion that is what cast her out of paradise. Does that make any sense???

If I explain Dust to you, it'll ruin the climax of all three books.Trust me when I say that it's the center of a gut-wrenching, devastating realization for the protagonists. If I explain it to you, it'll ruin one of those great epiphanies (both in literature and in life).
Hopefully it'll suffice to say that it's not what you expect, and it's not demonic as many Christian groups would have you believe.
