“A woman in a yellow sari, dancing feverishly on the road with vermillion marks smeared on her forehead…”
“A man standing nervously on a mud road getting ready to run at the sight of a crazed bull…”
“People unceremoniously dragging terrified animals into the temple, offering sacrifices to an unknown deity..”
Is this our definition of religion? Is this the spiritual fervor that people preach about?
Ideally, Spirituality is a holistic belief in a superior or higher power ; be it God, nature etc. While religion is overt and loud, Spirituality is a calm, tranquil emotion that is nurtured in the heart. Spirituality strengthens the weak, enervates the disheartened and forgives the sinner. If Principles are the “Crown of thorns”, then Spirituality or faith is “ Balm to the soul” offering comfort when there is none.
The essence of all religions are the same, however their approaches are different.
The essence of any religion is the Spirituality that we all strive for and religion is characterized by an Approach. The Approach, however, is taking a turn for the worse with people allowing their selfish desires to pollute their belief.
The film PK, for example, gave us a small insight into this selfishness. The questions raised in the movie still rings loud and true, like a clanging bell that does not give peace. It makes people question the Longstanding beliefs of a religion or a cult.
Why should we blindly follow all the beliefs of a religion without any questions? The answer to this question lies in identifying oneself. It lies in finding out the things that gives you peace and harnessing your belief in all divine things. It emphasizes a need to distinguish between what you believe in and what your religion tells you to believe in. This distinction is the first step in a Spiritual Odyssey. With it comes the realization that sometimes we are often ruled by unintentional fears.
“What if I fail? I better pray that I pass” or “ If I don’t pray, I’ll never get better”
It is at this point that we should remember that God loves us for who we are and that he would never create an obstacle if he did not believe we can overcome it. In return, we must believe that God would never leave our hand and will always be beside us to guide us over all the obstacles. After all, the more difficulties you overcome on Earth, the happier you will be in Heaven.
I’ll conclude with a quote from the Dalai Lama that is concise and thought provoking-
“People take different roads to seek happiness – just because they are not on your road, it does not mean they are lost.”

I believe in God but not the bible.. I live my life following what I believe is right and wrong by my own intuition. I do not depend on God to make me strong I use what I was given by him and expect no more.
