Ok, the strength of Christians, what the heck was up with the animal spirits attached to each human labelled a "daemon"?/ We all know the meaning of that word. Also, It appeared the whole mission in this installment of the trilogy (I'm sure the other three movies will come out in time) was to acknowledge the elusive "dust"...and the Magisterium's "sinister" quest to abduct children to steal their daemons? It was no doubt entertaining, but looking back, none of that makes any sense because we didn't really get enough history or follow-up (those of us who have not read the books).
Ok, so the daemon gets hurt, or unattached by the trippy machine, and then the individual is like catatonic? What is that to signify? The human soul being what animates us? Is the daemon a representative of the human soul? Hmmm. Why such a use of words to describe it, if that was the point?

From what I got in the movie, the demons were spirits of the people. Everyone had one. It said in the beginning of the movie that the demons were spirits in that world of the people who lived on that reality. While in our reality, the spirit lives inside of us. So we are different than them because our spirit lives inside of us, while their spirit ( demon) lives on the outside and can do what they can do.
'Dust' is sin - as near as I can tell from the analogy. When Nicole Kidman explained 'dust' it sounded a lot like the rendition of sin - which came into the world a long time ago. The 'innocent child' reference, Kidman explained, was the reason why their demons could change and an adult's demon could no longer do that. Their 'dust' had spoiled the ability.
I have just seen the movie, so I am still thinking about the analogies - some of which are really not very good analogies, but I want to be sure so I wont talk about them yet.

I was very curious about this as well after seeing the movie. The book was a favorite of mine when I was younger but I hadn't read it for years and so had forgotten all those elements! I'm totally going back and re-reading it... ;)
From Wikipedia: "The words daemon, dæmon, are Latinized spellings of the Greek δαίμων (daimon),[1] used purposely today to distinguish the daemons of Ancient Greek religion, good or malevolent "supernatural beings between mortals and gods, such as inferior divinities and ghosts of dead heroes" (see Plato's Symposium), from the Judeo-Christian usage demon, a malignant spirit that can seduce, afflict, or possess humans.... Thus daemones ("replete with knowledge", "divine power", "fate" or "god") were not necessarily evil."
As Christians have been notorious for doing, they adopted the word "daemon" from the Greeks and turned it into the "demon" we know as "evil or malignant" today.
My husband and I were talking about this earlier and he brought up the excellent point that people seem to be attacking this movie because "God" in it is devalued and rejected; however, the book is FICTIONAL! How can ANY book, (other than the Bible) claim to know something about what OUR God is (or isn't)? As practicing Christians ourselves, we did not feel this movie impacted our beliefs in any way. We understand that it is all make-believe ;)

The Magesterium has an interest in funding research to see what happens when children are separated from their daemons (basically separating someone from their soul) because Dust doesn't effect children the same way it effects adults...and the Magesterium isn't sure why. This is explained more in the 2nd and 3rd books.
Sorry if I spoiled it for anyone who hasn't read the books or seen the movie....

for sure if human beings carry to a cheished perception and that's attacked then they does no longer be susceptible to help it. people who're asserting it somewhat is barely a movie probable are no longer keeping solid perspectives of Christianity. If some thing they have been into grow to be attacked they might probable no longer want to help it the two. i desperate this week that i does no longer spend money to verify the Golden Compass. no person instructed me to try this it grow to be my very own determination. If yet another Christian is going to verify the movie it somewhat is as much as her or him. i does no longer tell them they shouldn't see it. i might merely tell them what i understand approximately it. it somewhat is a topic rely for a individual's very own conviction with the aid of fact the Bible does no longer restrict a beliver from seeing video clips generally. they'd evaluate added. I even have study various articles approximately it and considered the promo (the 1st 5 minutes) and that i understand adequate to appreciate what it somewhat is approximately. Animals are reported as demons in the outlet intro of the movie. Animals that are depicted as pets or acquaintances are being exceeded as as a demon which might make youthful childern greater accepting of the assumption of demons. If there is an prepared boycott so what? Is there no longer freedom of the click and freedom to no longer partake in a number of that press additionally? If this movie isn't a huge financially grossing image then it is going to convince some movie manufacturers to no longer make those sorts of videos. I merely wish people who boycott have their very own pesonal expertise proper to the movie in any different case they gained't look that rational to protest some thing they won't understand.

The original meaning of the word daemon was used by the Greeks and meant someone's inner spirit.

If it doesn't fit your little 3d world it's just too much, isn't it. Get out of the little box you have hidden in all your life and "see" what really is or could be. It all makes perfect sense when you really understand who and what you are. You are so much more than what the bible gives you credit for. This movie hints at what you are capable of when you think for yourself and remember who you are. We all have amnesia. There are those that don't want us to remember because we are so much more than they are. The authors of the bible intended for us to not know or remember. Even the bible hints at our dilemma. Let the sleeper awaken. We are all asleep and being controlled by those who use us and are afraid for us to remember. Open your mind to the truth. Truth is not popular, but it does set us free. All you know about demons is what the bible has told you. It doesn't make it so. There are different dimensions and they all operate on different principles from ours. Open up. Learn. Remember. Stop fearing the truth.

It's just. A movie. Why do you people INSIST upon reading so deeply into EVERYTHING?
"Daemon" means inner spirit. And yes, it means that your inner spirit is what makes you who you are, and without it, you are, basically nothing.
