I think pit bulls are only mean if you treat them mean. I don't have a pit bull, but I know someone who does. She is the sweetest thing. I would not call a shiba inu a japanese pitbull for fighting.

I have owned American Bull Terriers and No they are not mean in bread alone. You can make any dog aggressive. The name "PIT BULL" is slang and just means a fighting dog. American Bull Dogs are just the most common bread to be fought. I have never had any problems with any of my Bull Dogs. They make great pets and are great with kids. As for the Japanese dog, I have no idea.

There are 4 dogs in our neighborhood; all have lived here since they were 5 & 6 week old puppies.
A yellow lad, a brindle American Pit, a Red-Nose Pit, and our black American Pit.
People are actually shocked when they see our dog, because she is so good and follows hand and voice commands so well. She is very friendly, because we socialized her as a puppy.
She was so easy to train, it's almost scary! We have never hit her, never yelled at her or treated her with any type of cruelty.
Those other 3 dogs are psychos; we refer to the Red-Nose as "Hannibal". I have no doubt that he would kill me, if given the opportunity.
The others are aggressive and the owners have never tried to properly train them. They bark at everything that moves!!
Our dog barks so rarely, someone asked me if we had given her away.
Our dog has saved my life twice; attacked a cur that was trying to attack me and she knew the rattlesnake was in our yard before I did (it was coiled and ready to strike, when I finally saw him) and she refused to allow me to take another step. Everytime I tried to go around her, she blocked my path.
I know that she can be defensive, in a particular situation, but I trust her judgement and disposition not to be aggressive, due to her training.
She is my last dog; I have the best and doubt that I would ever be this fortunate again.

They're only mean when people make them mean. And no, a shiba inu is nothing like a pit bull.
Edit: On the contrary, shibas are very aloof and non-confrontational.
And to another answerer. There is nothing "mutt" about a true pit bull. www.akc.org, Staffordshire Bull Terrier

I have A pit bull and a rottweiler and they are the biggest babies I ever had. I take them on a regular basis to dog parks and events etc. As long as you keep them socilized and do not mistreat them they are great dogs, You also have to make sure they come from good tempered parents, do not buy them from puppy mills or the store. You must buy them from a breeder in which you can see both parents to make sure they have good temperments. I do not suggest getting them from a shelter. Don't believe what all the pit bull haters out there say. (they prob. own little fru fru dogs anyway.) The two times I got bit from dogs were both Labs. So it is all about the upbring and the breeder.

I am the proud owner of a sweet 2 year old male pitbull. He is the most affectionate dog I have ever owned....out of 6 breeds. Just like any other breed you cannot label the whole breed as "mean". Each dog has its own backround and personallity traits. Most of the pit bulls I have known are friendly....a couple shy...I've never felt threatend. Unfortunatly the media has cast a black shadow over the breed.

a shiba inu is NOT the japanese equivalent to a "pit bull".
And some dogs are mean, some are not. It has just as much to do with the owner and training as it does to the breed.
I had a shih tzu that ripped my finger tip off and I needed 32 stitches. THANK GOD she wasnt a bigger dog!!!

Most of the pit bulls I have met are very sweet lovable dogs. They have gotten a bad rap because humans "Michale Vick" for EXAMPLE have abused them and used them for fighting. Some people Breed instability. If you have crazy parents your more likely to have a crazy puppy. My mom is a Vet. She gets upset when people ASK her when their sweet happy puppy will get mean.
If your parents EXPECTED you to be mean from childhood. YOU would probably wind up that way.

No, not at all. Meanness comes from how they are raised, like people, and every dog has its own personality, also like people, so some dogs may be more sensitive and take things wrong. But no, Pitbulls are NOT mean, but yes, some are. If you asked rotweilers are mean, no they aren't. Yes, some are. Look in your family or at your friends. Are they mean? Probably not, can they be? I'm sure. Do some of them get easily offended as others do not? Of course. It's nature hun. No, Pitbulls are NOT mean. I hope this answers your question :)

I think that people make the pits mean. Not Shibas are not fighting dogs. They're a northern breed. They are just independant and hard headed.
