Sin causes us to break fellowship with God, before and after one's conversion or salvation experience. Confession TO GOD ALONE restores that fellowship. I emphasized the words because you will not find any command to confess to a priest or any other person in the NT. There is a verse in James that says to confess to one another, but that has nothing to do with confessing to a priest, etc., as above.
If you haven't read First John 1:9, please do so, and try to memorize it if at all possible. That verse says it a lot better than I can.

What is confession? It is to admit knowing Him as Lord and Savior.
- Whosoever confesses Him before men will be confessed by Jesus before his father (Mat 10:32-33).
- God abide with those who confess (1 John 4:15).
- Confession is with the mouth (Rom 10:9-10).
- Its called the good confession by Paul (1 Tim 6:12-13).
- Before men (John 12:43-43).
- Before baptism (Acts 8:37).
- Confession is made unto salvation (Rom 10:10)
What should be confessed?
1) That Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (Acts 8:37).
2) That He is your Lord and God (John 20:28).
3) The Christ and Son of God (John 11:27).
4) Lord (Acts 9:5-6).

~to acknowledge that you are fallible, and no better than anyone else
~to examine the circumstances surrounding the sin and try to avoid that configuration next time
~to commune with the Holy Spirit as the One to guide you in your examination
~to speak them in a noble manner, considering the priest who must listen.
~to feel true sorrow and contrition so that not only are you able to bear the consequenses of sin, you are eager to make reprisal.
~to be clean, perfect in the sight of the Lord, and happy that there is such a way to be cleansed.
~to receive, then worthily, the most Holy Sacrament of the Lord, after which you may fully understand His mercy, love and kindness to all.

I think it is maintaining a healthy relationship with God. For example if you cheated your brother or spouse, wouldn't the guilt kind of wreck your attitude or freindship with them? You might avoid them becuase of shame or being found out.... same with God, gotta admit our sin so we can agree with him and say sorry I didn't mean it God, please stay with me God do leave me.... and God will say, hey, it's ok, thanks for agreeing with me and talking to me, I will help you get over this.....thanks for confessing so you can let me into your heart and I can continue my work in your life....
So confessing is like letting God STILL have the key to your heart..... not confessing sin is like taking the key back or changing the locks..... gotta trust God... always...
.... that sort of thing....

God knows you sin and when you confess it to Him He is quick to forgive you based on His Son Jesus Christ and what He did for us at the cross. If you fail to confess it will weaken your relationship with God.

Confession is for you not God. It helps you define what you believe and allows you to relieve guilt.
Shame comes from what others think.
Guilt comes from what you think.
God is not in either of these.
Conviction comes from God and always precedes the act what ever it is.
Sin is when you choose to do what you believe God does not want you to do.

You repent to be saved when you come to God through Jesus. Confessing your sins one to another ,my opinion is that we all see that know one is perfect and that all of us has sinned and come short of the glory of God.
