If you are just learning photography I agree with the choice of the Pentax K1000. The Canon FTb or Minolta SRT-202 would also be excellent choices. All 3 are totally manual cameras. You set the f-stop and shutter speed and focus.

Although Minolta has been my camera of choice for 36 years, today's reality is such that I suggest the Pentax K1000.
Why? Simple. If you buy 3 or 4 lenses for it and later decide to switch to digital, you can buy the Pentax K100D Super or K10D and still use the lenses you bought for the K1000. Since you learned to use manual focus with the K1000, using manual focus with your older lenses on a K10D will be easy.

I often suggest the Pentax DSLR line because it has the Image Stabilization in the camera body and your older K-mount lenses will benefit from it.

I really can't help you with the Rebel. However, I use a Pentax K1000 (Mine is from the 70's) and it is still working. The pictures come out crisp - or blurry, depending how you shot it.
It's a good begginer camera because (Well the old models at least) it only hast the basics, there's no automatic wind or auto. focus. It does have a light meter though, which is handy. But all in all, it is good for learning basic technical skills, and it's just a good camera.
(I might be a little biased, as I'm attached to that camera)
