There is already a fuss surrounding THE Golden Compass (see here: http://buzz.yahoo.com/buzzlog/81733/a-golden-controversy)
Is it not a clear indication that they prefer censorship to argument and alterbative viewpoints. Whwn was the last time non-believers boycotted an overtly religious film, let alone all the 90% of films with religious overtones?

Exodus, old bean (and others): If you disagree with something intellectual, it is best to try and demolish it intellectually. Christians have a hard time doing this, hence the protests.
Only ideologues want to press their viewpoint onto everything.

The war is being protested because it is visibly corrupt and a point of law. Protesting the rightness of an indefensible idea is scurrilous and ludicrous.

For all those suffering grammar problems, I never wrote' All Christians', just 'Christians'.

I despair at some of these responses. Yes the right to express an opinion exists; yes it is not all christians.
The point is that using freedom to express opinions as a pressure tactic is an abuse.

They are not called protestants for nothing.

Christians believe there is absolutely no alternative to their god. Anything that disagrees with this is either evil or ignorant in their eyes. I wonder if they actually took a religious history class if they would come out with the same smug attitude they have now.
I grew up in a christian family. I have read the bible (three times actually...the first time because that is what I thought I should do as a christian...the second time to highlight the discrepancies...and the third time to highlight items of "passages" that could be written by no other than someone trying to press guilt, shame, and self-doubt onto a person)
The answer is easy...christianity is a cult, like ever cult before and after it.

The link you provided said "some folks" plan on boycotting the film. Why then do you make it seem as if millions of Christians are doing this? But even if it was every single Christian in America, don't we have that right? We are allowed to peacefully assemble in the USA. We have freedom of speech, so much so that we allow Muslims to desecrate our flag and say "convert or die". We allow the KKK to march. That's freedom!
My protest is to not spend money on the film or the books. I don't care what other people do.

It's already been answered why this movie is being protested. Your question assumes that Christians always protest films they don't agree with. This is false because it wouldn't even be possible to keep up with all the movie releases out there to protest them all unless you mean protesting them by just not going out and watching them. If that is the case then why the big fuss? People protest the war, should I make it seem like they shouldn't be able to do that because I don't agree with their protest? To answer your other question the Passion was protested not long ago.

I think it's a small group of vocal christians who sincerely believe that any questioning of their faith will have disastorous consequences in the culture and our society.
It doesn't have to be logical or make sense because these are matters of faith, not fact.
I'm going to see The Golden Compass tomorrow. I read the books when I was younger, WHEN I WAS STILL A CHRISTIAN, and did not believe that they were anti-religious or anti-christian. They, above anyting else, warned cautiousness whenver human beings gather together in groups - and that's ANY groups, religious and secular. I don't think that's a negative message at all but is actually very good advice.
Peace,
Jenn

Censorship? I thought censorship was done by the government.
Frankly, I could care less who sees any film. I just wish Hollyweird would produce quality films again, rather than the garbage they've been producing the past few years. It's gotten to the point where I'd rather spend time doing dishes than go to the theater.

Christians, by and large, are an insecure lot and they must not only feel the need to shove their beliefs down our throats, but try and make sure that any other ideas, beliefs, etc. that they don't agree with are smothered as well. Good thing that their tactics don't work in our free society!

You know It may be the literallists, or southern baptists or Lutherans sects that are pretty much literalists. Not to stir anything up though but I want to know the stright up reason too. I think The church thinks there all big and bad and **** and can walk around and say" O we dont like this take it away" but when Muslims say something were all like we gotta go blow them the **** up i dont get it. But man thats just my take.

Last I heard the Bill Of Rights was still in effect in this country. It includes free speech. We are allowed to express our opinions, and others are free to disagree with us. Don't recall anyone suggesting censorship.
God Bless America.

ok to say an entire classification of ppl always does something is completely false. i am a christian and think it utterly ridiculous when other christians freak out over things like movies. if you don't like what a movie is presenting, don't watch it. and if your faith is unsteady enough to be rocked by a movie, you should probably do an intense self inventory.

I think they are just ignorant. You saw what happened when they protested The Da Vinci Code. It became a box office smash. That's exactly what's going to happen with The Golden Compass. If they had just kept their mouths closed most likely it would have been a mild success.
