on here that could be easily answered with a simple phone call to your vet or the breeder you got the dog from? We've got people on here with pregnant dogs, dogs with infections, possible allergic reactions etc taking the time to log on and type out a question and then wait for answers.

Ok one if your dog is present and you're doing the right thing and taking her to the vet then you should have your vet's emergency number in case you need anything. Any vet worth their salt will do this.

Two the time you could have spent on here typing and waiting you could have looked the emergency vet clinic up a lot quicker.

And this is just my opinion but why ask OTHER ppl what to name your dog? Thats like asking someone else to name your kid. Its your dog you bought it or were given it you name it.

Bj i get what you are saying on the emergency vet part but hey some of these cases are obviously an emergency and at least the vet will have some idea before you get there of what may or may not be wrong with the animal

Well.....some people don't have ready access to a vet for non-emergencies. So it doesn't hurt to ask a question about a dog scratching until you get it checked out further. Sometimes there could be a simple and cheap fix. But I get very distressed when people say "My dog has a raging fever and is vomiting, is he OK?". This dog SHOULD be at a vet. And as someone else said, a lot of people on here are kids and just wanting some help when their parents obviously aren't doing the right thing by their pet.

As for names, I don't have a problem with it. Why not ask for suggestions? You might hear something you really like. Obviously the owner makes the final choice based on what they prefer.

Esther pretty much nailed it, I would say!

I'm fairly new to this, but have noticed that some of the questions/answers are less than serious. Individuals who have been on here for awhile do need to have patience if a question has been asked before - you can't blame newcomers for trying to find an answer to thier problem. I do notice that some of the responses are quite mean-spirited. I wish there was something that could be done about that. I have received many good answers and simply ignore the others... Maybe if these individuals do not get a reaction from people they will simply "fade away"... (Well, one can hope can't they?) :)

Well, I sort of agree. Asking for suggestions, like what breed of dog to get or what to name your dog, is okay, in my opinion. But yes, asking questions about serious things, like a sick dog or a dangerous dog or something, isn't very smart. That's what vets are for - to help with your pets, and I don't think everyone on this site are vets. Also, if you believe every answer you get, you might find yourself in a bit of trouble - what if someone was just mucking around and giving false advice?

I agree with the serious vet questions,
but asking for dog names is ok
people buy baby name books for the same reason and no one questions them
giving a name to another living thing is hard to do and people should have as many options as possible,
besides it fun to try to give your idea for names for dogs

THANK YOU! You are 100% correct.

My lab got a hold of a glass ornament the other day. Did I sit around twiddling my thumbs for an hour and then mosey on over to YA where I ask "What should I do...my dog swallowed glass and his mouth is bloody?! Heeeellllpp!"

No. Because I'm not an idiot. I got a hold of my vet right away, and now my dog is alive and well. The level of intelligence and common sense of some of these people worries me....

How about the fact that 80% of the questions could be answered by the question asker typing in the content into a google or yahoo search engine. They could be answered better and faster and (according to them!!) with less rudeness. So why waste the time typing into YA? If you want to know about mange - type dogs and mange in google. If you want to know about vomiting in dogs, type it in YA. Why come here and ask assinine lazy questions?

But yes - most of the questions on here could be answered by a simple call to their own vet - answered better and faster that way too.

I couldn't agree with your more. I often wonder why people would take the time to type in a question then wait 3 days for an answer while their dog is laying somewhere, probably outside, sick. It did occurred to me that maybe they're so desensitized by poverty or ignorance they think they're doing the right thing by posting on YA.

The name my dog questions are immature, harmless enough.

Yep. The basic answers to any Dog question are:

1. Don't breed. Spay/neuter your dog.
2. No, I don't know what to name your dog.
3. Yes, your dog is cute.
4. Go to a vet.
5. Yes, [insert brand here] is a good/bad food.
6. Yes, cooked chicken bones are bad.
7. Crate-train him.
8. Exercise your dog more.
9. There is no such thing as a teacup dog.
10. Adopt.
11. Don't buy dogs from pet stores or online.

I highly agree with everything you're saying. Seriously what are vets for anyways!? You pay them so much money, they're happy to help you for god sake!

I don't agree with the naming of your dog though, these owners are just getting ideas. Obviously they're not gonna let some random online stranger decide their dog's name.

yeah, they give you the big picture and are asking people who tell them to take the dog to the vet NOW! If they really want to help their pet with a health problem they should just go to the vet.
