Can you breathe through you nose, as that will cut down on the dryness. or perhaps, just before you run, swish some water in your mouth

Okay, so i am a freshman in high school and i run distance. As of right now im running the 1 mile. It is indoor track season and my legs can run me through the race fine, and dont even hurt at the finish. My second race is tomorrow and i plan to run faster then last week. (5:35). My throat was...

Hey as a fellow runner i know your pain. (i started my freshman year HS and am now running in college)
Best advice i can give you is to drink alot of water and garotade or power ade for the 2 days prior to race day.
I always try to drink a gallon a day which is the equivalent of 4x32oz Nalgene bottles. I strongly suggest you get one, they're indestructable and don't mold or smell.
This may sound like alot but i know your're likely to inhale your gum while you're racing hard if you try that.
As for indoor racing the air does tend to be dry inside. It'll get better once you start running outdoors again. but drink a little bid just before your race and then after too.

First of all start drinking more water on a daily basis. Not just on the day before or the day of a race. Cut out excess sugars and caffiene.
Next check in the pharmacy section at WalMart or go to a drug store. Look for diabetic products. There are gums, mints, and sprays that help stop dry mouths in diabetics. They would be safe for you to take. And most aren't very expensive.

I used to run long-distance track, and I never had a problem with dry-mouth or throat, probably because i breathed backwards than what most do. In through the nose and out through the mouth. Good luck and have fun.

Yeah gum. Also keep a water bottle on you, but if that's not possible, try keeping your mouth closed, or just swallowing a lot. I have the run the mile every other week, and that usually gets me through it.

honestly i have the same problem but i start to gag and that's the one thing i hate about indoor track...When im in an outdoor race that is hot i normally just swoosh water in my mouth and spit it out so that i dont get stomach cramps from water. But in indoors i just warm up outside and hope it doesnt happen. When you are done with your race cool down outside so that you get some fresh air.

People who say dont breathe with your mouth is stupid. Try breathing in your nose and out your mouth. If you breathe only thru your nose, you wont get enough oxygen in your lung. It is normal to have dry mouth. Just drink water when your mouth gets dry or becoming dehydrated.

Don't use gum. Sugar won't do you any good. Find a small smooth pebble. Stick it in your mouth. Under your toungue or something. I know it sounds crazy, but it works. Your mouth will stay wet. Just drink alot of water a while before.
