God could have made the world in as much, or as little, time as he wanted... perhaps he wanted to take six days so that he could add a personal touch to everything while taking his time.. six days was just as long as it took him... and, no offense, but God didn't make the world in six days because that was how the calender was set up.., HE set the calender up... many early non-Christian calenders have more than seven days in a week and many have less... i must say though, your question basically says "If the Bible is true, then why is it true?"...

Napoleon tried changing the work week to a 10 day week.
Didn't fly. It was in use for 13 years. But I think that we can all learn a valuable lesson from this mistake. Here are some of the conclusions that were made:
The calendar was abolished because having a ten-day work week gave workers less rest (one day off every ten instead of one day off every seven); because the equinox was a mobile date to start every new year (a fantastic source of confusion for almost everybody); and because it was incompatible with the secular rhythms of trade fairs and agricultural markets.

In England, people mocked the Republican Calendar by calling the months: Wheezy, Sneezy and Freezy; Slippy, Drippy and Nippy; Showery, Flowery and Bowery; Wheaty, Heaty and Sweety

The authors of the Bible had the free will to write Gods word in there own metaphorical style. It cannot be taken literaly. Say God created the world in seven days is a way to help us humans understand it. Time is a man made creation. And know one knows how long God considers one day.

The reason God did this universe in 6 days is because it's just an experimental prototype. After he saw how badly it turned out he didn't waste any more time on it.

the number seven is like a symbolic number in the bible. it was seen as a good, positive number. God created the world in 7 days. (rest on the 7th for man's benefit)

How can one apply time to One who is timeless?
I believe in evolution, God's creation in a very orderly progression.
As for the 7th day......just a number, maybe as someone says above, an ancient number signifying perfection. The "rest" is a lesson that we need to rest every so often for our physical and spiritual health.

It depends on which ancient Sumerian story you are reading.
Is it the Elohim, plural Gods, version or the Jehovah, singular God, version? You see this story, and many others are not original to the Bible.

This also teaches us that there is life only on this planet Earth.
[41:9] Say, "You disbelieve in the One who created the earth in two days, and you set up idols to rank with Him, though He is Lord of the universe."*
[41:10] He placed on it stabilizers (mountains), made it productive, and He calculated its provisions in four days, to satisfy the needs of all its inhabitants.*
[41:11] Then He turned to the sky, when it was still gas, and said to it, and to the earth, "Come into existence, willingly or unwillingly." They said, "We come willingly."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*41:9-10 The ``days'' of creation represent a yardstick. Thus, the physical universe was created in two days, while the calculation of provisions for all the creatures on earth required four. This also teaches us that there is life only on this planet Earth.
[41:12] Thus, He completed the seven universes in two days, and set up the laws for every universe. And we adorned the lowest universe with lamps, and placed guards around it. Such is the design of the Almighty, the Omniscient.
