Those actually diagnosed with kleptomania as defined in DSM-IV TR (the diagnostic and statistical manual for mental disorders of the American Psychiatric Association) do not usually steal things for value but as an OCD reason. Kleptomania is not acceptable as a defense in a court of law.

To answer your question, they may not remember the act or items they stole because it is usually done in a state so as to relieve fear or tension for some other co-morbid reason.
