what are some of the career opportunities in nanotechnology?

that is a very board and vague question. The oppotunities are endless and nanotechnology could be used in any field.

Most of the science-fictiony nanotechnology with nanobots and the like are still pretty far out. Most of the impact of nanotech today is in materials and electronics. If you were going to try and prepare for future opportunities I would study materials science.

An adjacent field is MEMS (microelectromechanical systems - that's what I do), where the devices are a few to many microns. That's where you find pill cameras that take pictures thoughout your body, huge arrays of moving micromirrors that make DLP rear-projection TVs possible, inertial sensors for deploying airbags, etc. For those sorts of jobs it's best to have studied physics or applied physics, but other engineering disciplines can work too.
