You do NOT want a Queensland Heeler AKA Aussie Cattledog AKA Blue or Red Heeler for a "guard dog."

Yes, they are protective of their owners and territory, but there is much more to the breed than that.

They need vigorous exercise EVERY day. They need mental stimulation or they get bored. And a bored cattledog can figure all sorts of ways to amuse itself and you aren't gonna like most of them. :-)

Cattledogs are like the really smart kid in school that gets bored & into trouble all the time.

Cattledogs are their owners' velcro. They are NOT gonna like being left outside alone. They will figure out ways to amuse themselves and, again, you ain't gonna like the results.

PLEASE do not get a Cattledog. They are the wrong tool for the job you want done.

Most owners love to recommend their favorite breed.

I do not because the dogs are not for everyone. I would suggest that anyone thinking of getting a Heeler do LOTS of homework & study the breed.

Get the Chow or a GSD.

A QLD Heeler is a great guard dog, depending on where you live they are a great outside dog and many people in QLD keep them outside, they certainly can not get neglected as then you would end up with severe behavioral problems. The temperatures here in QLD are quite hot and our winters are not very cold at all. These dogs need plenty of attention and they will protect their family but without plenty of attention any dog can become quite a problem. They are a working dog. Food for thought QLD people live outside alot as the weather here is absolutely marvelous.

Please stick with the chow. Australian Cattle Dogs were bred to herd cattle, not guard homes. If you leave a breed like this out in your yard to guard, you will eventually create a frustrated, bored and potentially vicious dog that will be impossible for even you to handle.
Do some breed research and find a breed whose primary job is to guard.

Edit: Hi Rick-you got to this before I could!

Get a security system. A dog is a living creature, not something to be left outside to guard an owner that doesn't care about it.
Security system, motion activated lights...leave the pooches out of it.

Queensland's get wild sometimes,,.,,,a chow is a good companion and family pet...they love and protect their people, but I agree dont buy a dog just to guard, take other precautions, get an alarm systems dogs are meant to love and enjoy, not bulldoze or trained to be mean......

you want a dog to be your loved one and companion then great, otherwise dont get a dog.....save a life

I didn't think a heeler would bite anyone, but a chow will bite everyone, including you. Get a well-bred Saint Bernard and treat it right. It won't bite anyone but will keep the bad guys away. Insurance companies will insure against dog bites from a Saint Bernard.
