Ok I'm a few months away from turning 18 and I would like to build up credit by becoming an authorized user on my mom's credit cards. She has REALLY bad credit because of her ex- husband but she always pays her credit card bills on time. So, if I become a user on her card that she pays everytime, will the rest of her bad credit transfer to me too? Or will I just get the benefits from her paying that card responsibly?

Hi Courtney,

If your mom puts you on any of the credit cards as an authorized user; the only ones that will show on the credit reports are the ones that you are authorized to use.

Once you turn 18 you can get credit cards to help you establish your credit.

I have found that Orchard Bank and Household Bank credit cards are very good to begin establishing credit. You can also apply directly with them when you turn 18. I have provided those links for you if you are interested.

Good Luck to you....

The rules have changed. If you are an authorized user, the account might show up on your credit report but it won't be used to calculate your credit score.

You would be better off getting a secured credit card -- you deposit X as collateral for the credit card. Use the card and pay it in full every month. After 6 months to a year, you will be able to get a regular credit card.

As of September 2007, authorized user status is no longer used when calculating your credit score. It would show on your credit report, but it would not be considered as building your credit.

There are a great many "student" credit cards out there that you will qualify for when you turn 18...I know for sure that Capitol One offers one and so does Discover.

The law may have changed but it does not always apply. I just last week pulled credit for a client who had perfect credit except for a department store card that his mom put him on as an Authorized user, his mom had several lates and his score reflected it. He does not qualify because of them. Don't count on being an authorized user helping you, it may actually hurt you as it did my client.
