Penicillin was discovered by Sir Alexander Fleming in 1928. He had put out some specimens with bacteria in them and noticed the next day that there was a zone of inhibition (no bacteria growing) around mold that had formed on his specimens. Penicillin works by inhibiting cell wall synthesis in bacteria. Now certain bacteria are resistant to penicillin because they have an enzyme called penicillinase that deactivates the drug.

penicillium is the black mold that grows on bread. it is used to synthesize penicillin. an antibiotic. antibiotics are used to boost the bodies immune system in attacking certain bacterias that cause infections. unfortunately the more you use antibiotics, the bacteria they are designed to battle, mutate and become more resistant to their effects.

'penicillin' is the stuff synthesised from the 'Penicillum' mould,I believe. It stops germs making cell walls, and inhibits infections. Lately, germs, being adaptable, seem to be finding a way around that and have diminished 'penicillin's' effectiveness
