i think you should neuter them. my dog was 14 when he got testicular tumors, and at that age he also had some other problems, he couldnt go under anesthesia to remove the tumors, and I wished i had neutered him. Do it now while they are healthy enough for neutering. it will be cheap too, you can neuter for $50 at shelters or there are certificates you can get that some vets participate with to neuter for $50

And especially with children that young, you dont want unneutered dogs!

I would say it's the age and the individual dog. At 10 months old most dogs have zero attention span. Don't give up on him, I'm confident you'll start to see improvements in 1-2 months. I've never noticed males needing a firmer hand than females. And as for dog world hierarchy, females usually rank higher than males. If it's any comfort, my first dog (a female) was exactly like yours is now when she had that age. Play, play, play and easily distracted. I tried everything. 1 hour exercise before classes, high-grade treats (she didn't want them), dog calmness exercises etc. etc. It was so bad that the other dog-owners would come to pat my shoulder after training, telling me how admirable it was that I continued to come week after week. She was dominant and extremely intelligent, and still turned out to be a sweet-natured, obedient dog - once she got over the scatter-brain age. :) If obedience classes is a hassle for you at this point, then take him out. Work with him at home in low distraction areas, and then gradually up the distraction level. Once he has learned to be more focused you can start obedience classes again. The important thing is to continue training him and remain calm, patient and consequent. Also, if the treats are not working for you, then maybe there is something else he'll be more willing to work for? My dog for example worked much better with toy/play reward than treats.

The responsible thing to do is to have ANY pet spayed or neutered. 2 male dogs, from dominant breeds, will battle for dominance. That is a fact. Dogs have no egos, that's a human condition, they don't know the difference when they're neutered. Once upon a time Mastiff's were used as war-dogs, please do the right thing so no one gets hurt and get them both fixed. This should be something all pet owners should budget for, especially when purchasing expensive breeds. Long Lake Vet does super affordable vet care. You'll be much happier.

I own a mastiff. I agree that you should get your boxer neutered. There is no reason at all not to get him neutered and you are going to help him by doing so. The mastiff pup IMO is too young to be neutered and you should attemtpt to hold off until he is about a year. Large breed dogs should be neutered a bit later...

You are dealing with two breeds that are both very dominant type dogs. Two males unaltered would be a very bad idea.
You have one full grown and one pup and are worried about it now just wait until the pup gets to the age where he will try to exert his dominance over the older male, And it will happen, you may have a fight to the death on your hands.
This is a very bad situation.
The dogs should never be left alone unspupervised ever.
And both should be neutered but that may not solve your problem.

Well male dogs don't usually get along with each other because the 4 year old is the dominiate one of the house and when another dog comes in the house the 4 year old thinks that all the attention will be on the puppy and not him. So he ends up attacking the puppy.

You really need to neuter your dogs. Not only will this process result in less agressive and competitive problems, but your dogs will be more comfortable. Besides, it is the humane thing to do as hopefully you are not thinking about having puppies because there are allready so many homeless dogs (and puppies) out there with no homes in cold shelters waiting to be euthanized or abandoned.

Please get some professional training help. Your puppy's life is at stake and you need to learn quickly about how to manage your household before the puppy gets killed.

Yes, it's probably true that you cannot have the dogs in the same room. Please don't leave them alone, unattended.
There are many other reasons to neuter your dogs. Please consider that it will be best for their health and well being as well as their behavior.
good luck!

Why aren't your dogs neutered? They will most likely get along alot better if they are both neutered. Male, unneutered dogs can be very competitive and aggressive, and you should be concerned.
Get them both fixed!

Why didn't you neuter your older dog? It would take the spring out of his step, and maybe he won't make chow out of your puppy.
