Your observations are correct. It is crazy what they get to hand out pills. It is all supply/demand driven. The profession keeps a low number of graduates so there is a chronic shortage of pharmacists and thus the high wage. Also, the pharmacy schools recently made it so a pharmacist has to go to school longer and now they get a doctorate degree. Back in the day pharmacists just had bachelors degrees, then they went to masters, now they have doctorates. It is just the profession raping the populace.

Pharmacy school is a 5 year program to graduate. Then there is an internship in a pharmacy.
No one other than a Doctor or a pharmacist may dispense prescription drugs.
Pharmacist's earn what the market will pay. They work very odd hours and some even work Saturdays and Sundays.
Pharmacist's also have strong lobby groups in the state and federal government to keep the rules and regulations favorable to them.
Basically, the earn the high salary immediately after graduation and do not really expand their income much above that except for cost of living and inflation.

Why do you think it should be easier to get into a job that is highly-skilled and requires a lot of advanced work? If you can't get in, you shouldn't be doing it. There's a shortage of doctors and nurses too. That doesn't mean that anyone should be given the job. Pharmacists have to go to a LOT of school. There is no reason that the shortage alone should make them well-paid. They are well-paid by places like Walgreens because they are highly skilled and highly-educated.

Pharmacists have never been poorly paid.
There is a large demand for them and not a huge supply. It takes a minimum of 6 post high school years to get a PharmD. The average pharmacist knows more about medications than the average MD. Most MDs will not disagree with that statement. Pharmacists are able to do a lot.

The pharmacists are very much in demand, and thus command high salaries. It isn't just Walgreens... all the retail pharmacies pay their pharmacists well, because the pharmacists can always find other jobs.

I think Walgreen's is trying to boost its pharmacy sales because that is where the money is. Perhaps they want to be sure they have qualified, experienced druggist and that means they would have pay out more. in our area Walgreens had put up a pharmacy only building with a drive through. That fell through. If you watch Walgreens advertisement, they are trying for people to switch over to its pharmacy. At the Walgreens store there's hardly anyone in the store when I go there. The merchandise, displays are not appealing.

First, a person interested in becoming a pharmacist has to become a doctor, then they go to pharmacy school. With 8-10 years of training and being responsible for peoples lives, I'd want to be paid well, too.
