I drive a 1998 Dodge Neon Sport. Recently, it seems that I am getting terrible gas mileage, sometimes as low as 25 mpg. I had also been filling it up with gas that contained 10% ethanol. But it suddenly jumped to 34 mpg when I bought gas that had no ethanol in it. My assumption is that my car is not designed to be fuel efficient with ethanol, but I don't know for sure. Anyone out there know for sure or know where I can find a defnitive answer?

Gasoline has more energy in it than alcohol does. That's why you get better mileage with gasoline than with gasohol. Cars that are designed to run on E85 will not get as good gas mileage as they would with pure gasoline either. The savings in price per gallon is lost in miles per gallon and in some cases the cost is greater. Just one of the things the ecologists "forgot" to tell you.

Spend a little more upfront and have the car checked over by a shop. Then you'll know if it is OK or needs repairs. I once thought that $75. was a really great price for a 1978 Monte Carlo until I found out that I couldn't get it to run. But I did sell off some parts and towed it to a salvage yard and pretty much broke even.

that car and a lot more was designed to run on 10% ethanol it wont hurt it,the mileage wont be that far off if you use it or strait gas, theres not that much difference in the two,the mileage you experienced really had nothing to do with the gas ,not that much difference anyway,at the most you would notice a few miles difference in it if that ,if its tuned well it will run as good on either one,and the mileage should be around 25 on the average ,maybe a little more on the highway, good luck.

I own a Neon 2.0 SOHC 16V with a 5 speed and what you describe for mileage is my intown and highway numbers.

There is no way you got 34 in mixed conditions and every likelyhood you get 25 in town.

10 percent Ethanol is all I run in mine because it costs 10cents a gallon less than plain old regular in our town.
Your car is designed to use 10 percent.

Double check your figures and remember it is easy to short fill a Neon(fill the tank but not get in the last gallon) and get weird figures.

Regular gas will naturally get you more gas mileage then the ethanol. Ethanol is a gas substitute which tries to reduce the amount of gas used in the U.S. and your neon is running fine
