I bought a car knowing that odometer is not working for last three years. The odometer shows 126K but it actually is 148K. I just got the temporary tag. I need to get the inspection done to get permanent registration. My question is how big a deal is odometer discrepency? I dont care abt how much the mileage is because its a old car and i dont want to spend a lot of money on it. Is it possible to get registration done without fixing the odometer? If it luckily clears inspection will there be any problem when I report the mileage while registering it! your advise is valuable for me. Thanks!

When you register the vehicle, you must list it as "not actual mileage" or "true mileage unknown" . If you sell the car, you must disclose that the mileage is not correct also, even if you have the odometer fixed, because there is no way to know how far the car was driven with the bad odometer!

Check with your state's motor vehicle department, but I think you will just have to fill out a form saying the mileage is unknown. If you need a working odometer you can get one from a junkyard.

In many states they don't even worry about the odometer in vehicles over 10 years old.

ITS BEST IF YOU CONTACT YOUR LOCAL (DMV) DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES OFFICE, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO ANSWER ANY AND ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS AND AT THE SAME TIME YOU WILL BE GETTING THE CORRECT ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION.
