An experienced sales professional will be able to figure out that you are a serious buyer or a time wasting #E%@$ in about 5 minutes of talking to you! The dealership is there to sell cars, not to provide you with a chance to drive something that you can not afford, nor have any intention of buying!
Do you work? If you do, do you expect to be paid for your labor? Car sales people are paid on commision. They only get paid when they sell a vehicle. Some days they may wait several hours or more for a customer to come in, (especially around the holidays when sales are slow) and if they are wasting time with you, they may miss the one serious customer of the day!
Unless you are seriously looking to purchase a vehicle, pay to go to the auto show and look! Do not expect to be able to test drive anything unless you seem to be a qualified buyer!

It's garbage like you that makes me crazy. We get paid ONLY to sell cars, not to test drive them. Don't go into a dealer unless you are buying a car, otherwise you are wasting our time, and we have families to feed. When you come in and try to play your childish games, the person behind you is the buyer, now i'm stuck with the peice of trash (you) and the other guy got paid. Real Nice, thanks moron.
If you are comparing a couple cars and plan on buying one, i will welcome you to try my product and let the best win. If i was unable to earn your business, fine, that's my problem, but at least i wasn't jerked off by some idiot.
Even so, i can smell a kid like you a mile away, and i can assure you, i'll know if you are there jerking someone off. You wouldn't drive my cars unless you paid me first.

Don't waste your time. An inexperienced driver will probably not be allowed to test rive too many cars. All they have to do is ask a few questions and if they don't think you are serious they won't offer.
And besides that, driving a car around the block isn't that much fun. It's a lame waste of time.

If you want to go test drive a vehicle, go test drive a vehicle, but don't go jerking the salespeople around. What goes around, comes around. Remember, vehicle salespeople are just there trying to make a living. Most of them don't get paid to drive people around. Your fun little test drive could be taking food off this person's table.
When I send my people out to "mystery shop" other dealerships, I always tell them not to go on a test drive. If you want to test drive a vehicle you don't think you can buy, rent one.
If you have to go do it this way, just be yourself, and be truthful about what you're doing. This way your conscience will be clear. The salesperson who will treat you right is the one who will deal with you even if you obviously aren't rich.
BTW-If you don't want a dealership to know your financial information, or look at your credit, just don't sign anything. The Federal Government will fine a dealership back into the Stone Age for running your credit without your signature.
Some of these answers are getting down right nasty, but I understand their anger. I echo their feelings, but tried to be nice about how I said it. Automotive salespeople are one of the few groups left that society seems to be okay with abusing. STOP CAR BIGOTRY NOW!!!

You can walk into a dealership and test drive any car, but if you go to one that sells the expensive ones they will know right away you can't afford it. but most will ot give you a hassled about test driving it.
i would be up right and honest with them with just the saying of you want to test driive a paticular model best way is to go to edmunds.com and clicking on new cars and finding out what one you might like and have your figures with you so you look more interested than they might think. I alwys walk in and tell them waht car and what model I want to test drive and tell them I want to speak with an internet salesperson , most will do the internet sales them selves so when I test drive it I already know what the car should cost me and If i decide to buy it I know what I should pay, If the price is what I have with my figures I buy, otherwise I walk out. have walkout out many times and have been called back many times. They all know most people get their figures on line and know aht the car should cost so the hassle is very little to none at all. be frank with them and tell then up front you have your figures and if they will honor that price and you'll usually be very suprised they will meet that price.

Car salesmen get paid on commission, not hourly, so why would you walk in and drive cars for the fun of it? Don't waste their time, they are out there trying to make a living for their family. If you want to drive something for the fun of it, drive a friends car or go rent one for the weekend.

Just don't give them your social security #. Without that they have nothing! Test drive all the cars you can handle and then just leave. However, keep in mind they will do everything in their power to get you to sit down and stay to go over price... Don't fall for it...

Don't give them that much information. Tell them you want to buy a car around $40k and you're not sure what kind. Ask them for suggestions and when they make them tell em you want to see how it rides before you make any decisions. Just tell them it's not exactly what you're looking for and leave. You don't give them any financial information until you're ready to buy.
