Some new car dealer will have a body shop but they are not really part of factory trained service technician group. They are just like other body shop out there.
For a minor repair, many shop can do it just fine.
For a major repair, you really need to get a couple estimate then ask yourself a few questions before send it to the repair shop of your choice.
Does the body shop do a same repair (most likely NOT) with lower price?
How long is the warranty?
Does your insurance stand behind the shop?
Check with local bureau of consumer affair for their rating.
One important thing to remember is: body shop routinely sends vehicle to dealer service department for many repair they can not do it by themselves (engine management, airbag, steering control, ABS, high tech electronic, ..).
If the insurance is paying for the repair, i would bring it to a body shop at new car dealership. They may not be the best but they are most likely to use OEM part and they do have a group of trained technicians near by to answer some technical questions.

RE:
Do car dealerships (ie. Nissan, Honda, etc.) do body work as well as mechanical work?
I was in an accident, and major damage was done to my car. I am not sure if I am better off taking it to the dealership or an auto body shop, where they can do collision work as well.

I work at a dealership and would take my car to the very best body shop in town. Which by the way is not where I work. Ask around before you have a crash. That way if something bad happens you know where to tell the Wrecker Driver "Take It To Brand X Paint And Body" And for a few more dollars a month get rent car coverage on your insurance policy.
Some dealers body shops are the very best for the brand of car they work on every day.

A lot of dealerships farm their body work out. When I hit a deer with my 97 pathfinder the insurance co sent it to their shop so depends on your agent

dealerships rip you off. I was once quoted for 1000 dollars just to repaint my bumper. I told them maybe next time.

they do body work too, but you'll be riped off, so look around awhile for a nice body shop, and if you have insurance than you should be covered
