I ate mac and cheese at my friends house once, and instead of her puttin in the cheese, she just put in butter and salt, and it tasted really good. Does anyone know how to do that? Like how much butter and how much salt?

Buttered noodles oh yes. I like to buy egg noodles. In case you don't know, those are flat wavy noodles. Cook them in a bit of salted water until done, package will say how long 7-10 min. drain, and put a chunk of butter, in it , melt, and toss. Salt and pepper to taste. It is delicious and less calories than cheese. My mom made these occasionally. We loved them.

My mother used to cook pasta in salted water, drain the pasta and then stir in butter till it melted -- that was the only way my sister liked it.

Mom also made pasta with bechamel (white) sauce and then baked it like mac and cheese.

Baked Macaroni w/Bechamel Sauce

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter an 8" x 8" baking dish and set aside.

Cook 1-1/2 cups of small elbow macaroni or pasta shells according to instructions, drain and set aside.

Sauce:
2 Tbsp. butter
2 Tbsp. flour
1 cup milk
dash salt
dash white pepper

Topping:
1/2 c. toasted breadcrumbs (I make mine from toasted french bread but you can use store-bought plain or italian) mixed with 2 tbsp melted butter, set aside.

Sauce: In heavy saucepan over low heat, melt butter. Stir in flour with a wire whisk. Cook over low heat for three minutes, stirring constantly (This mixture is called a roux). Do not allow the mixture to brown.

Gradually stir in milk, whisking constantly. Cook over low heat for 3-5 more minutes until sauce begins to thicken. Season to taste. Makes 1 cup.

Pour sauce over pasta in baking dish and top with the buttered breadcrumbs.

Bake for 20-25 minutes until nicely browned.
