If you receive a Honorable discharge or retire you can get Medical care for the rest of your life, but at a minor cost. Retirees receive free care at the VA med centers, along with a low cost med insurance for out of the VA system care.

Vet-USAF / I use the VA system.

My dad retired as a Chef Master SGT. USAF 23 years, uses the out of VA system insurance.

Hard to believe some of these answers.
I am meeting with a congressional Staff next week to discuss a small part of Military health care and how it relates to Social security.

First off you do not get free health care from the military for life, just for signing up.

I have 22 years of active duty and i have to pay a premium of $57 quarterly for myself and $103 a month for my wife.

I have a $12 co-pay for a doctors visit, my wife has none.

We both pay $9 for a prescription, $3 if its generic.

If you make a carreer of the military, you can expect free or very low cost health care after you retire. While you are in, your care is the responsibility of the service.
But one enlistment tour won't do it. You'll have to serve for 18-20 years.
It's a good life if you choose it.

Absolutely not - this is a total myth.
Even for retired military members, medical care is not free, though an insurance program (Tricare) is available.

No. I am dealing with the VA system right now. Some VA health centers are more helpful than others, and there is some cost. I recently switched to a new hospital to receive my care through (had to switch because I moved) and I like this hospital much better. They're much more on top of things and willing to help.

Only if you got 100% disability. It took my dad about 10 years of fighting for it because of stuff that happened in Vietnam. The VA staff aren't exactly the warmest or most highly trained medical people I've ever met either.

No. the only way you get free medical for life is if you get hurt and get discharged and become 100% disabled by the V.A. Your health is worth more believe me.
