There are TONS of options in the LA area....
Kidspace Museum in Pasadena
Zimmer Museum in Beverly Hills
Fo Fo Figgily / Bright Child (Santa Monica and Oak Park)
The Train Museum in Griffith Park (the name escapes me right now.)
You could do it at a bowling alley, an aquarium, tons of options at Disneyland. I'll include a few websites to check out.
But frankly -- at this age, they won't even remember it. Just dinner at a kid friendly restaurant (Like Red Robin) with all your family and friends should be fun enough for the little guy.

Chuck E Cheese is loud, dirty, and annoying. And a 1 year old would be incapable of anjoying it so don't punish all the guest by making them go there.
What about renting a banquet room at a restaurant and having a little buffet dinner or lunch (depending on his sleep schedule). You can put your son at the head of the table for the dinner and everyone can enjoy the meal with him.
I have to agree with the other poster that he will be most happy at his own house though. It might not seem like a big place but I have squooshed people into my house for my daughters first birthday and it was great because she was happy - there were no tantrums, she could play with her things, and if she got tired she coudl take a nap and we could continue to party. Just keep it in mind.

As a mother of 3, two are January babies I know how you feel. We went to Chuck E Cheese a lot for the early birthdays. He will still enjoy the music and lights. Or like someone else said ask a friend or relative to help you out by letting you have the party at their place.

Invite closest friends and family. Not very many of them. Serve up a dinner of spaghetti and salad or something. Have ice cream and cake, and a few gifts. Be sure to get lots of pictures, especially a pic before and after baby has enjoyed a slice of cake.
At age 1, the baby is too young to remember any of this, anyway. So the party would be for the family, not the baby.

My son's B-day is at the end of Nov. and it is always cold too. I bundle him up and we have it outside anyways. My place was way to small also for my family and friends but you know , You make do with what you do have. People understand and most of the time they are going to go outside anyways. Make sure you have it during the warmest part of the day and don't stress to much. LOL. Blow up some ballons. Get a cake and make some finger foods. Do it from 1:00 till 3:00 .

The most important thing to remember is that your son is turning one.....don't expect too much from him. Make sure you don't turn it into something that will make him and you stressed. It needs to take place at a time HE is always alert during, eating things he is comfortable eating, surrounded in a place he is comfortable...having your friends and family is fun for you but the sensory input will be stressful on him. You may not think your house is big enough, but believe me, it is the best place to have your party and have HIM enjoy it! Plan everything to put the party completely in his comfort zones. Then even if you just have oreo cookies and koolaid, he will be full of joy and joyful to be around at this special time!!!

I had a party for my son's first birthday and he fell asleep before we even lit his candle. lol It feels like a big deal because your baby is turning one, but save the big parties for when he's older and can enjoy it. Maybe ask a family member if you can have it at their house if yours is too small, but I really wouldn't put in a lot of money or worry with the first one.

I would stick to a small group of people like 7 people tops because he may feel overwhelmed. Just plan to do something simple, like maybe a trip to the local aquarium and hit up an ice cream shop for the big song! (Little kids don't really dig the big rat and it is a nesting place of pedophiles.)

Chuck E Cheese's sounds like a fine idea to me especially if other kids are coming. Otherwise, you can make the birthday about you and people can brink gifts for the kid to where ever you want to go.

i had the same problem with my sons first birthday, i ended up asking my moms boyfriend if we could use her house because mine was to small as well... i didn't want to do chuckie cheese or anything to expensive because he was only turning one and wouldn't really be able to enjoy it or remember it, asking my boyfriends mom if we could use her house was probably the best thing we couldv'e done. we were able to invite everyone and it was a lot cheaper than renting out somewhere or going somewhere like chuckie cheese
