If you don't get the same brand, what technical specifications can you look for to make sure they are a good match? Or is it just a matter of what sounds good?

Dont worry about it. Most of the well-respected subwoofer lines dont even sell regular speakers.

You dont have to worry about 'tone' matching the sub to the other speakers because:

- Your ears are very poor at low-frequency tones
- You get a LOT of the subwoofer sound from wall reflections
- The sub is never involved in directional sounds like the front array.

Hi.A subwoofer is a speaker that supplements the main speakers and only plays the lowest frequencies (the lowest two octaves below 80 HZ) To make the bass blend better you need to cross it over at a low frequency. The same brand name as your speakers would certainly be advantageous but you can use other brands that come close to your main speaker' bass sound.
