I am 14, and have years to decide anything, but i would like to do something in the military. I have taken Strattera and other meds., but am now on Vyvanse. Could I still join the military, or is that a lost hope?

You have to be off your meds for one year before you enlist, and it can't interfere with your work. If they notice it is not working, they will kick you out on a medical discharge. You need to be able to prove you can function without meds of any sort in the military, and you won't be allowed anything other than birth control (if you take it) at Basic.

Years back I was denied entry because when I was 5 I was diagnosed with simultaneous Ignotia(sp?). In order to be accepted I had to get a letter from the child psycologist that treated me explaining that it was a developmental disorder and would correct itself by the onset of adulthood.
Of course this was back when the Mil was veeeeery choosy about who they let in. Nowadays it may take some visits to a psychologist, but in the end they might let you in.

I seriously think that MOST soldiers have some form of ADD!!! Plus, my brother was ADD (not AdHd) and by the time he was 20 he had stopped taking his medication and was fine and could focus better. Years from now, you may not need the meds.

There ares ways to learn to cope without the meds.. Try learning to do without. My son did. You could ask a recruiter where they stand on ADD meds too.

I asked my uncle, who is a leiutentant, and he said "Yes, it would be no problem.
You'll probably just have to work a little harder.
And by the time you're done training, no body will even notice you have ADD. Military discipline is really just self-discipline."

It is disqualifying if you are on medications during the 12 months prior to your attempt to enlist and if you cannot demonstrate good academic performance despite your ADD.

You have to have been off medication for a certain number of years and you can only have taken Adderall, Ritalin, one more I think. When I was at MEPS they disqualified people for it

you must be off the meds UNDER A DOCTOR'S SUPERVISION for 12 months and function normally during that period( keeping grades up, etc) before a waiver will be considered.

It depends on how good your meds work. My stepbrother joined with a.d.d. and he enjoys it, but he still had to have a doctor OK it.
