I try not to be mean but sometimes you can't help it.
People also mistake being mean for honesty.

I don't consider myself a mean person on a regular basis. Now, when I get mad, that's a different story. I go beyond mean to downright vicious. As you said, sometimes you just can't help it.
And I think you have a point about people being mean when they're being honest. There's always a way to tell the truth, even an unflattering truth, without being mean.

You're mean if you deliberately hurt someone for no good reason. (e.g. "Say, you look particularly ugly today." )
If you hurt someone because you can't help it and must be honest ( e.g. to save someone greater embarrassment from a third party ), it is not meanness but actually a kindness.( E.g. Do you want me to tell you if you look OK? Well, your shoes don't match and I'd change them if I were you. )
If you refrain from hurting someone and are not honest in order to avoid hurting her, that is not even kindness. It is self-protection without sufficient concern for the other party. (E.g. Do you look OK? Sure, you do, no problem. )

Actually I am very kind. but, I find being a woman, that if I am too nice people take advantage, and take me for a pushover. then I turn into a *****. I wonder why this has to be this way? Women in our society cant really be who they really are. we have so many labels for women.

I don't think so, but I have become very honest, and will always tell the truth, and answer a question truthfully, which has caused some problems.

No, I don't think I'm mean and I make it a point before getting mean or nasty to think first, it's saved me alot of grief.

I am definately and honest person, but not usually mean unless someone deserves it.
