What does in a roundabout way mean?

When my friend asked her boyfriend if he could tell her he loved her, he said yes but in a roundabout way. What does that mean?

That means he does not love her. If he can not say it without reservations then he does not love her.

"Roundabout" means not straight-on. If he says this to your friend, he does not love her, in my opinion. Either that, or he has serious intimacy issues and is not mature enough to have a girlfriend.
