this is driving me crazy:) i wanna know if anyone has experienced this with their dog...i have a lovely chihuahua but ive noticed lately when he is sleeping he twitches, eyes blink, ears move, etc (which i understand is probably dreams) but along with that now, his throat area moves rapidly. the other day he was curled in a position where i couldnt see his mouth but last night he did it again and i happened to see during the "twitching" that his tongue was about 1/4 sticking out and he was kind of suckling REAL hard on his tongue. it freaked me out! he did not stop until i called his name and of course he woke up. it scared me because i thought he was having a seizure or something. ive never seen this before...have you?

aww my puppy does the same thing. although he is much bigger than a chihuahua all does act the same. Alot of dogs do this its like a child sucking on their thumb in their sleep.... he also tries to suck my arm but he is 5 months old and his teeth are sharp! in the middle of the night he just latches on it hurts! But it is 100% normal, nothing to worry about.

The issue is that dogs are poor generalizers - it's not that the dog is "sneaky, greedy" etc, but that they have no intrinsic sense of morality or "rightness" and so only think something is "bad" if it has bad consequences. If it has never had bad consequences except with a human in the room, then how on earth are they to know that the rules still apply with the human out of the room? You need to train in such a way that corrections and rewards occur when the dog does not think you are present - i.e. hiding around the corner. Read here https://tr.im/nycqQ

I personally owned a Labrador Retriever (read: chow hound) that could be left 6" from a hot dog in a sit-stay for half an hour and not touch it - the word was "mine" and it meant that you don't touch that, even if I am not in the room, even if whatever, you DO NOT touch that. You could leave a plate of food on the floor for hours and not only would she not touch it, she would also keep the other animals (dogs and cats) from touching it.

In all probability, these dogs studied were just not properly trained/proofed before the experiment. With "proofing" to set them up and catch them in the act to give

Chihuahuas aren't the only breed to do this. Dogs dream, just as people do, rather vividly, and sometimes when dreaming, they act out their dreams. I have a labrador that barks in his sleep, and yes, even when they are fully grown, dogs do dream sometimes that they are suckling, and will act that out as well (just like some adults still suck their thumbs). I also have an older female chihuahua who has epileptic seizures, and they are nothing like what you described. More than likely, your chihuahua is just dreaming.
