I have a 6 month old sapsalgae (it's ok if you don't know the breed) They are medium sized only getting around 45-65 pounds. My dog is around 35.5 pounds now but is a little skinny. He's had problems with loose stool and being skinny so he's on Royal Canin Intestinal. That has helped his poo but he's still so skinny! He's getting taller but is skin and bones. I doubled the amount he was getting to 3 1/2 cups a day. But now the vet says I should triple that and feed him 12 cups day!!! That just seems like so much!! I guess I should add that I'm in Korea and the vet doesn't really know the size of cups. Does this seem possible. I just fed him a little over 3 cups and now he seems bloated and uncomfortable. You know, the feeling you have if you eat too much. Does he really have to go through this 3 times a day?

I forgot to add that I switched him from innova to california natural over to royal canin. On everything except the royal canin he had runny poo. I'm in Korea so my choices are a little limited. The top brands here are innova, california natural, Science diet, and canidae

And he really is skinny. He has a lot of fur and I can see his ribs and hip bones through the fur. I used to leave food down and he would eat until full but the vet told me the reason he had runny poo was because he was eating too much and I should limit the food. Now she says I should feed him an insane amount of food to help him gain weight.

That's way too much food for a 6 mos old puppy.

he is being fed way to much and the wrong food. Royal canin is full of things like powdered cellulose and empty grains. these things are not digestible by dogs. that means that you are paying for more piles of feces. Also if he is only 6 mo than try and find a puppy food. this will give him more protein and more fat which is what he needs. Look for a food that does not have corn, wheat or soy in the first 5 ingredients. that will be a good start. Then feed him what the back of the bag says. Add some milk. not cows but if you have goats milk that's great! If none of this works for you than make your own dog food. Put another question on here about recipies for homemade dog food and you will get plunty of great recipies.

Put down alittle at at a time, not the full 3 cups at a time he will overeat, then over drink and bloat and be sick...he can hurt his little tummy not to mention the intestines..

the largest one recorded shows to be at 57 lbs, your right, have a vet check for tape worms also, sometimes in a dog that is eating this much and not good healthy weight gain can be from tape worms...make sure he is okay....

the book of 1972 Simon and Schuster, shows the dog, but not alot of info on the dog.....sorry....but the food thing is basic...dont over feed even if skinny.....check for other underlying health problems first...

Try feeding a high quality diet.

Royal Canin is not high quality.

A high quality food will help with the runs. regulate him, and put HEALTHY weight on him.

Many people think their dogs are "too skinny" when they're not.

You should see a bit of ribs.

I agree with you though, 12 cups is WAY too much - maybe you misunderstood what your Vet said?

Try adding supplements like raw eggs, salmon oil, vitamin E. Then maybe add some plain yogurt, and cottage cheese.

Just go with what it says on the bag. 12 cups/day is an insane amt of food for a dog that size. You can try feeding your dog some canned pumpkin for the runny poop. That will help to firm it up. Just make sure that he is getting plenty of water, dogs can get extremely dehydrated when they have runny poop. Hope this helps!

I would try to put food down all the time if the vet feels he needs this much. I would also be looking for a second opion.
I usually feed rice and chicken it's usually easy on the digestive system, often given with dogs with diarhea and helps to put weight on.

12 cups is like 3600 calories! That's way too much. I would add an extra cup a day to what you have been feeding and slowly increase from there if even that is not enough. A dog's stomach wouldn't even hold 12 cups even if broken up into three increments, that's just insane!

Will the dog stop eating when he is full? Some dogs do better with food available at all times.. so, just make sure the bowl is full .. the problem is if the dog doesn't know to stop eating when it's full it may get sick.

Take the dog to the vet and have a stool sample checked . Sounds like he has worms to me . That would explain the loose stool , being thin and eating alot !

i have the same dog as you. don't feed what the bag says it is just trying to make your dog eat more so they can make more money. i would feed it 2 to 2.5 cups twice a day in the morning and at night. wait a bit to see what happens

I would not feed any dog that much food even if it was a giant breed dog. I'd just feed it the recomended amounts on the dog food bag.
