Sign up for an email blast for flights from Boston to LAX at www.farecompare.com.
Once the flight goes on sale, you will get an email before the prices are loaded into the airlines own website. Just keep checking back every 15 mins or so...and you can grab a heck of a deal!

The 'cheapest airline' for this route will change from day to day, because airlines are constantly update their fares.
The best way to answer this question is with a 'roll-up' travel site that checks multiple booking sources for you. My favorite is kayak.com. They check all the usual suspects like Expedia, CheapoAir, and Orbitz; but also the airlines' own booking sites. You can even get them to send you email alerts if the fare drops for a particular route you've selected.
I used to travel with a large group frequently, and we'd play a "game" in which the person who found the lowest fare won a free dinner compliments of the other travelers. I've had many, many free meals because of Kayak.
Happy Travels!

It would be easy to answer if you gave dates, I would have checked for you, but It's very easy to do yourself. Go to http://www.wiitravel.com click on "book travel", plug in your dates and you will get tons of choices, when you find the one you want just follow the instructions, its very easy to book your own trip, and you save money. Good luck!
