A scanner will scan the picture/ document that you place in the tray ( face down towards the printer). It will take a few moments. A preview of the scan will come up. You can reline or adjust and re-scan then if you so choose. From there you choose to either print it or to save it to your documents or pictures. Basically a scanner is used to import and save an image or text document into your computer.Check in your owners manual about different settings. Start out with the default settings until you get comfortable with things. Then when you have some spare time .... : ) ......you can experiment with some of your options for different things that you are scanning.

You plug the USB Cord from it into the back of the computer. It also may be a special plug for the scanner but it will be easy to find because there will be only one place it can fit into. Then you should install the software that comes with the scanner.

Im not really sure what you mean by How does a scanner work? If you mean the basics of it, it scans anything you put onto the glass onto the computer. You just place the image you want scanned on the glass and press scan and it will apprear on your computer.
