The first person to experience that was one of the Wright brothers:
In 1908, passenger flight took a turn for the worse when the first fatal air crash occurred on September 17. Orville Wright was piloting the plane. Orville Wright survived the crash, but his passenger, Signal Corps Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge, did not. The Wright Brothers had been allowing passengers to fly with them since May 14, 1908.

I was on a private twin-engine Cessna going over the Bermuda Triangle from Ft. Laurderdale Fla. to Gitmo Bay, Cuba in 1978 when the right engine quit. [this is a true story] The gauges said that the engine was operating a-ok.
The pilot may-dayed his situation that he would have to fly over Cuban airspace to get to the Naval base and minutes later 2 Soviet Migs were on us. They dropped off when we were near the base and we landed without a problem on one engine. A mechanic inspected the plane and started the engine immediatedly. He found nothing wrong with it. Go figure.

Yes. I was on an American Airlines 737-800 that was having a problem with the flaps upon landing in Orange County, CA. Because the runway is smaller in Orange County, we flew over to Los Angeles and landed there safely with the extra bit of runway that we needed. We landed safely with no problems.

Yes I am a pilot, in 1996 when I was under instruction in a cessna 172 the aircraft immediately after takeoff began to cough and started to die mysteriously. It became an immediate forced landing, even the instructor with me at the time was sweating. We landed safely, but my heart rate went through the roof. I still fly.
