No, but he was native American when he was alive. He was a heavenly messenger whom the Lord used to relate a message to Joseph Smith, which is why he is called by the name "angel". He abridged the plates which became what we now know as the Book of Mormon.

What is interesting is on an old map Moroni was the capital of the Comoros which was similar to another Mormon name (Cumorah) located in the Moazambique channel.
