Christmas is not the time to give a dog to your children. And a tiny dog, like a shitzu, is especially not a good idea to get for a 6 year old and a 16 mo. old. Children tend to pick the puppy up, could drop it and kill it. It could get stepped on (they are so tiny when they are puppies). I would wait until after Christmas and choose a dog that is not as delicate as a shitzu - maybe a Boston Terrier or a Pug? Young children can scare tiny breed dogs.

Any canine's habit relies upon a great deal on the owner. I surely have 3 shih tzus and that they are stunning with toddlers, very laid back and submissive. yet no longer all shih tzus I surely have considered are this type. only like people, each physique has this is very own character. yet good practise of the canine and extra importantly of the youngsters could render a sturdy consequence. attempt to keep away from permitting the domestic dog to pass slowly over the youngsters or stand on correct of them. even yet it would desire to look possibility unfastened, or maybe relaxing, it is interpretted as dominance for a canine. additionally, make effective that the youngsters do no longer play with the domestic dog like a toy. toddlers can be particularly threatening to a canine, exceptionally a small canine. And if any canine feels threatened it would desire to react with the help of biting as an attempt to flee the region. as long because of the fact the youngsters can study to play wisely with him/her, and he/she will believe the youngsters, you may all have a good style of delight.

Well it depends on if the kids are rough that may be a problem if your six year old is gentle it could very well work maybe you could keep the todler away from the dog for a bit? until the dog gets used to it? I'm really not an expert on small dogs. but I hope I this can help.

If your six year old is gentle and responsible, it could be OK. The problem comes up when toy dogs are in homes with rough toddler 2- and 3-year olds that play too roughly and can hurt the dog or don't understand when the dog wants to be left alone.

No dog is good around children that young. Especially the 16 month old.
Why dont you wait a year or two (or three!) and then get a golden retriever?

Horror story:
My 8 year old sister was playing with our cousin's shih tzu and I guess she startled it. The dog jumped from her lap, up to her face, and bit clear through her lip! She had to get stitches inside and out. She's eighteen now and still has the scar.

A lot of small breeds can be a bit snappy when around children who don't respect the boundaries (pulling ears/tails, yankin' fur, carryin' them awkward, chasing them, etc.)
If your children know how to treat a dog gently, there shouldn't be a problem. Otherwise, you might want to look into larger breeds who are more tolerable of hands-on kids.

Frankly,I've never seen a shih Tzu that was a good dog. They seem to be too loyal to one person.
Plus they appear stupid to me in that they never chase stick, wrestle ball, run around , etc, etc, etc.
However, YMMV. Individual dogs are different.
