When the casheir at the drive thru gives you back your change and drops it instead of giving it to you in your hand, are you supposed to open your car door and start picking it all up and looking for it, or is she/he supposed to offer to replace the change and give you new change from the till. We're not talking about 50 bucks in change, we're only talking about 85 cents or less?

You probably can't open your door. But I would say try. Then say, I can't open my door wide enough to get my change, so I am going to have to pull my car out of line to get it - or can you replace it?

That way they are making the decision and taking the responsibility.

get out of the car and pick up the dang money!
I hate when people make a big deal out of nothing. The cashier made a mistake, just open your door, bend down and get the 85 cents... because it would kill you not to have 85 cents

The cashier should offer to replace the change, and go get it themselves if they need to account for it. However, it is fine for you to say 'don't worry about it' and get it yourself, if you are able. Some people aren't as mobile or quick as others, and in some cases it would be much faster for the cashier to replace the money, than to have some poor old lady half falling out of her car to scramble up some change.

You will have to get out of your car and get the change. Most places will write up the cashier and after 2 or 3 underages in their cash register, they are in danger of losing their job. It may be only 85 cents to you, but if they had to give that much to every car....

Just be patient. My daughter is a first assistant manager (makes over $30,000 a year) over a fast food place and all the rules and costs that they have in place is out of this world. You must realize there are always two sides to every story.

Yes, the cashier must be careful. I told my daughter she needs to write a book about the procedures for people at fast food restaurants.

as somebody that once worked in a drive-thru i say just give the person a break, they make mistakes too. But heres the proper etiquette: If the line is really long they should just get more change from the register; but if the line isn't too long, it's not out of line for them to ask you to pick it up.

They should offer to replace it if they were polite however this would never happen so you are left fishing for your change unless you ask for a manager and demand they replace the change.

The cashier should replace the change.

If it was an accident, if you want the change, it is easier if you get out and get it than for the cashier to do so. If it was done deliberately, insist the cashier replace it or collect it for you.

i think the cashier should replace it. its not like there's alot of room for you to open your car door, plus you are holding up the line. if the cashier gets written up for short drawer, maybe he/she will be more careful.

I believe the cashier should count out more change and apologize and send you on your way.
It is their resp. to go out and collect what's on the floor.
