I'll be on Oahu in a few weeks with my sister-in-law, who has skin cancer. She can't be out in the sun so what can we do besides hanging out at the beach? Any suggestions?

Here are some indoor ideas on Oahu:

- The Bishop Museum in Honolulu a great indoor activity where you can learn quite a bit about Hawaiian culture, history. They've also got a neat astronomy exhibit.

- Tour the only US palace in Honolulu at Iolani Palace. http://www.iolanipalace.org/

- The Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie (northeast shore) has quite a few covered and shaded areas for their island cultural presentations. I'd bring an umbrella though for going from demonstation to demonstration. You might be able to contact them and see if they can do anything special to accommodate your situation. Their evening show is terrific.

Hey you can do both at the same time here. Dukes at Waikiki is probably some of the best people watching on Sunday afternoon. I really like La Mariana restaurant out at Sand Island. The north shore is always a kick and I used to love going to the Sugar Bar. A real dive bar that had bikers and brawls great drinks and pretty girls. But... Last I heard it was closed down. Also... Giovanis shrimp truck on the NS is some of the best scampi in the world. You can hear many languages while scarfing the great shrimp and smoothies. Hawaii Yacht club at the Ala Moana Harbor/Waikiki is fun and inexpensive. Just wander in or ask at the front gate for a tour. There is a great little taco stand at the Harbor as well. Called Tropical licks, Its right ac cross from the Chart house. Good Stuff!! More if you need it. drop me an email.

The cool thing about Oahu is that there is everything to do. You can go to Waikiki and take a catamaran booze Cruise for $10.00 all you can drink. Just walking the strip at Waikiki at night is fun with all the street performers and people watching. Good shopping. Great surfing and diving all over the island. Sea Plane and glider flights at reasonable prices. Hit the north shore and the Haleiwa area and see some of the best waves in the world. And if it’s flat the fishing and snorkeling is spectacular. There are water falls, parks, concerts, and an amazing area of Strip clubs. (Not to my taste but available). Try Dukes for cocktails at Waikiki on Sunday afternoon. Beautiful people watching. Go to the Hawaii Yacht club on Friday night and ask for a ride on one of the big sailboats for the beer can races. Right after the races there are Fireworks on the point at the Sheraton. Have Lunch at tropical licks. It’s a cart by the Chart House that serves some the best tacos in the world. Tell Jim that Randy said Hi. The list goes on and on. Absolutely one of the best vacations in the world. I am envious. It will be awhile before I get back there.

PS there is a great old restaurant on Sand Island. La Mariana. It is this Great Tiki bar and it might be the last Real Tiki bar in the Islands. Sand Island is kind of Isolated and La Mariana serves a small Yacht club there. The Place is all Bamboo and blown up Puffer fish. Gorgeous waitresses and the old Lady that owns the place comes down, holds court and greets her guests. The food is just spectacular. With thick and hot Juicy steaks, Ice cold beer and great cocktails. There is a small piano bar and I swear that the same guy has been playing that piano for thirty years. The place was built at the beginning of WW2 and really hasn't changed that much. The old Bamboo has a kind of inner glow that only comes with age and care. It’s really great. Most tourists never find it because it’s off the beaten track. Check it out. You won't regret it and the price is right.

go sailing, climb a mountain, go whale watching, hike, explore Hawiian history, and have a drink and just relax. There were enough bars in Waikiki to keep me happy for a week...I found a great little country bar and got drunk there alot. I think it was in a basement of a Waikiki hotel not far from the marketplace.
