People have covered the rank pretty well.
But specifically what a MSG, or any member of Special Forces does, I believe you'll find that if they know, they won't tell you, and if they tell you, they don't know first hand. His primary function depends upon his MOS or specialty. But teams are pretty well cross-trained. So people can stand in if somebody goes down.

As for the rank below is the army rank structure. What makes Master Sergeant so "special" is that they have been in the military for a while, more than likely 15+ years.
E-1 Private
E-2 Private
E-3 Private First Class
E-4 Specialist or Corporal
E-5 Sergent
E-6 Staff Sergeant
E-7 Sergeant First Class
E-8 Master Sergeant or First Sergeant
E-9 Sergeant Major or Command Sergeant or
Sergeant Major of the Army
Okay, I know you just asked for the team sergeant but I'll breakdown the structure of a Special Forces Group.
Command: (18A) Must be a captain, his executive officer (180A) which is a warrant officer.
Operations/Planning:
The jobs of operations planning and intelligence are split between two senior sergeants. A master sergeant acts as the team sergeant and the operations non-commisioned offcer (NCO 18Z). He is asisted by another more junior NCO, with specialization in intelligence and operations (18F)
Weapons:
The A-Team has two NCOs assigned as weapons specialists (18B). Again, one is senior with both carrying the same specialty code.
Engineering:
As with the weapons section, two engineering (18C) NCOs are assigned to each A-Team.
Medical:
Two of the SF's superb medical specialists (18D) are assigned to each A-Team.
Communications: Each A-Team has two communication (18E) NCOs

Most of the above answers give you a pretty good Idea, I will say that a MSG is not the same as a Sergeant Major, He is the same as a First Sergeant. I thought everyone in the Army knew that. And he is one rank above what I was able to achieve before i retired as an E7
Nothing special to anyone who obtained the rank, I guess you could call it special to those who were under it.

A US Army Master Sergeant or MSG is an enlisted man at pay grade level eight. This is the second most senior enlisted rank possible in the US military. An SF MSG may be doing any number of things, the possibilities are too many to explain. I do believe the team sergeant is a MSG though, if so he is coordination the different specialists to accomplish the team mission. An Army MSG has many years of knowledge and experience that make him a valuable member of any unit and is often asked to advise the unit leadership.

a master sergeant in the marine corps is an E-8. If you are in a special forces until as an E-8 then you probably arent doing much of anything. It goes from E-1 to E-9. Of course E-9 is the highest

In the Army, the enlisted ranks go from E1 to E9 with Command Sergeant Major of the Army as the highest rank. at E-9.
The Master Sergeant and Command Sergeant Major are ranked equally at e-8. The difference between the 2 is that a Command Sergenat Major is directly in command of the soldeirs' day to day life and command all enlisted soldeir from a Battalion level and higher.
While Master Sergeant indirectly control soldiers through clerical work, like approving orders for soldiers to be transferred to other units, providing careers paths with training and basically making sure all the "Red tape" is perform so individual soldier don't get bogged down in day to day paperwork. They generally don't have very many direct reports and work at the battalion level and higher level.
A master sergeant in the SF would generally make sure that all the supplies their soldiers' need are requesitioned for and they would handle getting the soldiers their orders so that they can be transported when ordered to do so.

Master Sergeant is a senior elisted rank. What makes it special is you don't get there by accident and without paying your dues.
Honestly don't know about the special forces unit, but probably running it for the Captain.
