The Buddha talks to and about the gods on many occasions in the texts. The idea of a creator god may be incompatible with Buddhism, but devas and beings like the Greek and Norse gods are not necessarily precluded.
So, yes the Buddha was an atheist with regard to a omnipotent creator god. But no the Buddha was not an across-the-board atheist.

Since Buddha is not a real person or a real god, he couldn't be anything but a lifeless statue somebody made to represent the god they wished to worship.

i dont see how Buddha is atheist...didnt he believe he was God? or something was God?. how then is reincarnation possible?...well i cant say i know much about Buddha...but to believe we are spiritual with the ability to keep coming back is to believe we are immortal. What do Buddhist say makes this possible?...uh, is that not God/s?

all gods known to the human race are human... I believe that Buddha was a kind and wise human... people are just as guilty of deifying other humans as the ones who go about deifying themselves... such as the pope... one without wisdom but with the audacity to seek to control the world through religious power... the pope works to control who would be deified, that's what the process of saint hood is about... seeking to force the world to value only his choices ... but notice only those who have followed the church's dogma are chosen to be seen as having value...

I think Buddha was a Pantheist, as in, he believed that God is everything and everything is God, and there's no such white guy with a big white beard in the sky condemning or honoring your every action.
