Try mashed potato or mix a little cornflour with water and add that when the stew is boiling.
Next time, when you're frying off the beef and onions, add a couple of tablespoons of plain flour and mix that with the beef and onions before you add the stock. The broth will then thicken as the stew boils but you have to keep stirring it or it will go lumpy.

Mix a tablespoon of cornstarch in with a 1/4 cup or so of room temp broth, or even water. Stir until mixed, and then stir into stew.
It should thicken nicely. If it still isn't thick enough. Do again.

I toss the beef in flour, salt and pepper, and brown the meat on high heat, then add the onions. Cook a bit, add your water, or stock, bring to a boil, add other veggies accordingly, simmer for some hours, and usually it is thick enough. If not,I make a slurry of cornstarch and cold water and take out some of the broth, bring to a boil, add slurry, cook til thick and put bake in stew.

Make a thin paste of plain flour & water. stir till smooth & mix into broth stirring as you go. The amount will depend on how much stew you are making, generally about 2tblspns flour to 4 cups liquid. It's all trial & error I guess!

When you cook your meat, you should coat it in flour. After my onions are cooked, I add more flour (according to my recipe), stir then add my liquids. This combination of flour will thicken the stew and you shouldn't have to add any other thickening agent. If this isn't the way you make your stew, then just add a slurry to the stew, bring to a boil, and it'll thicken.

if you have corn starch or powdered tapioca, you can make a slury with water and a bit of the powder. this will thicken the broth with out lumps. If you just toss streight flower in the broth you will most likely get lumps. Another way is to make a roux with equil parts butter and flour in a pan and then add it to the broth.
