a lot of people are very hypocritical - they wouldn't dare say a word against the beliefs of muslims or jews but they have no problem railing against christians even to your face. how do they justify this?
also, why do so many people seem to care so much about it? you'd think they would have their own belief and just be able to leave well enough alone, but a lot of people i know who are atheists seem almost obsessed with christianity. is it fun, is it the 'in' thing to do nowadays? do they have some psychological problem? i don't get it.

edit:
the main problem seems to be that people think all christians are bible-thumping Evangelicals. i'm roman catholic, and i have NEVER tried to force my beliefs down anyone's throat and i don't even talk about my beliefs to anyone who doesn't outright ask me. i'm just sick and tired of people hating my religion because it honestly feels like emotional abuse.
REPLIES:
polaris: a lot of christians i know really don't care what other people believe and i certainly don't. if they do they need to see a shrink.
heathen daughter: you're making alot of sense. 'christians' and 'self important jerkoffs' do not always overlap...
gruz: but not all christians are Fundamentalists!
fallon: i've been in an airplane and i didn't see heaven...i'm pretty sure it's spiritual, not literal
Umm Ali: i'm coming to realize that...thanks. you're awesome. :)
Un-Cola: so the entire 80% is responsible for the 5 million Evangelicals?

One reason, IMO, is that Christians stand for something MUCH bigger than most people are willing to apply themselves to.

And Christ, after 2000 years still intimidates people because they think they can't live up to what He requires of us........NEWS FLASH.......NO ONE can live up to the expectations of what we are to be as Christians.........That's where forgiveness comes in

As an atheist I do have my own beliefs and would like to leave well enough alone. Now if you can get all the Christians to keep their beliefs to themselves then it would be much easier. Believe it or not I actually already know that according to many Christians I am headed for hell, I don’t need constant reminding just so one can earn brownie points with their supposed deity. When you tell someone that the creator of universe recognizes me as a “fallen creature” and that a blood sacrifice was necessary just so he would even consider allowing me in his presence, then top if off with I am going spend eternity in agonizing torment, what kind of reaction would you expect?

I’m certainly now the one with the psychological problems?

I know exactly what you mean. I'm an atheist with an entirely Christian family, so i do kind of sympathize.
One thing I have noticed in defense of this annoyance of Christianity, is that Christians force religion upon others. Some Christians- not all. You don't ever see Muslims or Jews come to the door and preach. Most religions keep to themselves.

Quite simply because I haven't met a Jew holding the Torah, spouting out verses and telling me I'll burn for all eternity. And because I'm afraid I'd get hurt if I argued with a Muslim.

I've met many nice Christians, just the intolerance and evangelism combined makes it hard for me to get along with some. Most of my friends are Christian actually.

Take a walk with me one day and you will see its not just you dear. I am a Muslim women and I can't even go shopping with out with out some form of hate being thrown my way. Even here on Y!A there is alot of Muslim bashing. Go to the chats you will see so much more haters in the Muslim chats then any other religious chat. We all get it by those that hate us. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about it but educate. If they don't want to be educated then move on. Sorry but thats just the way it is. I don't like it, but what can I do. I can't live my life worrying about it. And you shouldn't either dear.

Yes, a lot of people are very hypocritical...and some of these hypocrites are Christians. I don't have a problem with Christians. I do however have a problem with people who call themselves Christians, and they go around sleeping with married men or they lie to get some kind of personal/monetary gain. THOSE are the type of people who have psychological problems!

Ok.... this is probs not the nicest... but i have seem many of my religious friends make Dumb, stupid decisions based on their religion. They seem to accept what is told to them easily, not attempting to validate, test or actually make sure they are told the truth. Just because your religion says god is god etc... so do all the others religions, except different gods. And its unlikely that you are somehow more correct than the many billions of other religious followers in this world (even though you think you are!) They make illogical decisions. Which often later regret :p. I will not go to detail here, as the posts above me have done a good job. A random not of thought?? Why do we believe in god/religion?? IS it because we cannot make morally correct decisions based on the fact that hey are right, but instead be cause we fear divine punishment?? Let us be good people because we want to be, not because we area afraid. And afraid of what?? In this, as i have seen in the bible (i was bored and read it) and at church (i have to go to at Easter with my parents :(.) There is alot of reoccurring theme about living forever?? I think its just a whole lot of people are afraid to die, and will believe anything to change their views so they think they will live on. You might say we Atheists are going to hell, but i say u are hoping to live for ever, but really you are misguided and are wasting you life.

Beause Muslims and Jews don't knock on my door at six am, condemn me to hell for believing differently then them, pressure me into taking a literature at a PARADE of all freaking places or scream from the corners that I will go to hell.
When they do though, trust me, they are totally fair game too.
edited to add: Just so that you know, Christians have been doing this since day one. They used to desecrate the pagan temples in Rome before the Pagan Wars. That's why they got fed to the lions. If you guys would just keep to yourselves, people would leave you alone.
Also the two people who are arrogant enough to say "They see Jesus in us and they hate Jesus" that such a load of ****. Maybe if I saw MORE of Jesus in Christians, I would like them more.

I don't say bad things about Muslims or Jews because I have never received emails from them telling me I need to believe in their god or suffer for eternity. They haven't tried to convert me, so I have no problems. Christians on the other hand, are a different story...

Once again, I don't care what other people believe, it's when they start trying to shove it down my throat that I turn aggressive.

When John the Baptist came along preaching about the coming Messiah, paving the way for Jesus' ministry on earth, this new concept scared them, and people usually hate that which they don't understand. In Matthew 10:22, Jesus said : " And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake; but he that endureth to the end shall be saved." Thus, there is a price to pay for following Jesus' teachings. People will hate you. Look how much a lot of Muslims hate Christians. That hatred has been drummed into their heads since a very early age.

Poor you, every one hates you. You only make up 80% of the country and every body hates you!

Please get over your persicuion complex.

edit: That is not what I said. What makes you think you are hated. Most people are of your own faith, and they certainly don't hate you because you are a Christian. Maybe you should avoid phrases like everybody hates Christians, when you know it is patently false.
