Between 2 and 3. My daughter was closer to 3, but she really liked her crib and didn't want to change. She's the only one who went into a toddler bed too. My boys all went straight into a twin sized bed.

Sometime after the age of 2. Don't do it too fast, they don't like change and feel safer in their cribs than in a big bed (where they can just feel lost). There's no fixed point for this and it varies from child to child anyway. If the child gets to the point where they climb out regularly, lower the side and put pillows on the floor there. Make the room toddler-proof in all areas. The transition will come when he/she is ready and so are you. Just don't do it too soon if they are happy where they are.

Age is not the deciding factor. If your child is starting to climb out of the crib, it is time to get him into a toddler or regular bed. Some children move out at 1.6 and other move out of their cribs at 3 or 4. It really is a safety issue, not an age issue.

When my daughter was 2 1/2. She never crawled out of her crib, we just figured she was getting older and wanted to slowly transition her. She in her toddler bed (formerly her crib) now and eventually she'll go into a big bed.

if your child is 4 month sold and get out of the crib and crawl ? then yeah toddler bed. age is not a factor. ability is. my girl was 10 months old, and my son was bout the same .
i know mine were young..hmm..it's been a while..but i recall them being able to get out of their cribs early on. so i switched em to toddler beds.

My little girl was about 15months, when she escaped from her cot bed. It was then we decided to turn it into the bed, which brought it's own problems like now being in charge her self when she wanted to get out of her bed. But that is the joys

By crib I assume you mean cot. A crib here is what babies go into as newborns and you make the switch to a cot the minute they can sit up.
You are right in what you say, if they can climb out the cot, then they move to a bed, obviously, the cot is no longer effective.
My 3 kids all went into a bed purely on this factor. My eldest went from cot to bed at 8 months as she was a little ninja and could climb out then and even walk around. Tom, my middle kid couldnt climb out until he was about 2 and half and thats when I made the switch for him. Ollie, my youngest, he is nearly 2 now, and he tries, the little tike, but he can't escape yet, but I am already considering making his bed up.
I purchased a guard that slots under the mattress and protrudes up above it to kinda stop them falling out and I use that when the kids first move to a bed, and as soon as I am confident they wont fall out of bed much, normally about 3 months for mine, then that comes off, and I put a spare quilt on the floor for the first couple of weeks just in case he falls out.
REMEMBER. The minute s/he can get out of bed, you need to make sure that if they get out of bed in the middle of the night, they can't get up to too much mischief as you sleep, remember, they are little monsters at that age. All your drawers are no longer safe, keep the bathroom door closed or at least turn the taps tight. Expect them to sneek into your bed. A stair guard is good at this point.
You will kinda know when its the right time to take him/her out of the cot, The cot has its advantages, like if he wakes up, you know he aint gonna wreak havoc or he wont fall out of bed etc, but the minute he starts trying to climb out, he could try to climb out one night, and fall trying, or catch his leg on the way out, not good.
Changing the bed might have good and bad consequences, depends on how you introduce it to him/her. Make them feel as though they are big boys and girls and they will feel special about their new bed, but not always. Some don't like change, so leave the side of the cot down, or if your cot is like mine, you can take the sides off and it becomes a bed.
Hope this helps.
