She's got terrible plaque buildup. I've used the practice toothpaste, but its not cutting it. but she doesn't know how to spit. Can i use regular toothpaste, only once a week or once month?

I really do not think it will hurt if you are using it that infrequently. You really should just call a pediatric dentist to get the child in for a cleaning. My daughter's dentist did not give the full cleaning just a touch up that did wonders. He also lets the parents come back when they are that young.

You can use it daily if you are not giving her a floride supplement. I have the same problem and both my doctor and dentist said to discontinue the use of the floride drops and start using regular toothpaste on a daily basis (the size of a pea) it works SO much better.

does the package for the toothpaste say "use a pea size amount to minimize swallowing for young children"

I do. Everyone here will say no but my daughter wants to be like me and I'll do whatever it takes to get her to brush her teeth well. Another tip, she doesn't brush well, so I take a washcloth and still wipe her teeth and gums and that helps a lot. Letting her eat carrots and apples are good for cleaning the teeth too.

Not really a great idea, unless you can get her to rinse and spit.

Try baking soda instead - it's a mild abrasive, safe for teeth, and gets the job done.

As long as she isn't swallowing it it should be fine.
