That is fine. I am the Godmother of my best friend's baby and I am not Catholic.

Wow, this is impressive how lots of people who're of course unknowledgable interior the Sacrament of Baptism in the Catholic Church chosen to answer this question (incorrectly, i could upload.) The godparents do no longer surely "carry out" a ritual throughout a baptism, yet they do take an rather specific place interior the Sacrament. They stand beside the mum and dad of the youngster, as witnesses and as supporters and conform to advance the youngster with the values and ideology that the Church believes. They, alongside with the presider (priest), do hint the sign of the go on the brow of the youngster. additionally they, alongside with all and sundry interior the church, renew their very own baptismal vows (ex. "Do you reject devil and all his works and all his empty provides you", and so forth.). They or the mum and dad would carry the youngster as blessed water is poured thrice on his brow - or the youngster is immersed in a huge baptismal pool ("interior the call of the father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.") After this, the youngster is anointed with oil or chrism. Then a definite, white baptismal garment is given to the godparents and that they are asked to place it on the youngster. next a definite baptimal candle is lit utilising the flame of the Easter Candle (the super, white candle you notice on the front of church, which could continually be close to the baptismal font). This flame represents Jesus with us and whilst the smaller baptismal candle is lit, it relatively is surpassed to the godparents with those words: "Godparents, please come forward to grant to the newly baptized the sunshine of Christ." and that's what the godparents do throughout a Catholic Baptism! desire this allows!

I don't think they have to be Catholic, but it would be better if they were. I say that only because she, as a Godparent, promises to help raise the child in the Church. It is usually better to have Godparents who are familiar with the faith and teachings of the Church.

But as long as your Aunt is willing to be a "Godparent" and help raise your daughter in the faith in which she is baptized, it should be fine.

Read the Bible, sweet girl, before you have your child baptized. Baptism is for people who have chosen to follow Christ. Has your 1-year old done that? Is she aware of what baptism is for and about? If not, she shouldn't be baptized. It doesn't matter WHO the God parent is.

God bless.

I thought they had to be catholic, but maybe not anymore. What a wonderful honor for your aunt. She will be proud.

Usually they are, but they don't have to be. I think u should think about someone else, cause the whole point is to have that person or (godparents) show and educate your daughter about your faith not theirs. Perhaps, if u have a sister or brother...u can ask them. good luck

I would hope in today's world, it would not make a difference. Ask your Aunt, and see if she would be honored.
