As President, I would be getting my information from the top generals of the military. These are men who fight over there in Iraq and say how long the deployments should last and who gets sent and where, etc. I wouldn't have the valuable knowledge that they have. THEY will know what to do.

Personally, I would call the insurgents' bluffs. I would issue a declaration that states that if the Insurgency leadership surrenders in its entirety and allows us to put them on trial, I will withdraw all our troops from Iraq and from the entire Middle East in general. The insurgency leaders always claim that they will do anything for their cause, which is what makes them popular. If they surrender, which they won't, I will withdraw from Iraq and leave it to its own devices. The government installed will have to cope on its own but will be more able to do so without the infrastruture that the insurgency has for itself. If they do not, I will point out that they are hypocrites and they will lose all credibility.

I will do this because the "War in Iraq" and the "War on Terror" are wars of ideology that cannot be solved through bombs. Bombs only strengthen the terrorist's claims that the United States is a brutal, merciless country of murderers and heathens. By showing that the leadership of the insurgency is being hypocritical, I will remove the trust that their followers put in them. It will destroy their credibility, thus destroying the value of their instructions. The insurgency will crumble.

I will also, call for martial law to restore stability. The democracy of Iraq will still be in place, but will be heavily influenced by a council composed of US Generals. The Iraqi people expect this and it will not upset them too much. In fact, it may halt any further insurgencies, as insurgencies only occur in the Middle East when a leader is viewed as weak. The insurgents aren't terrorists who hate everyone. They are colloborators trying to overthrow the weak government and take over. This happens every few decades. With the insurgency eliminated and the weakness removed from the government, I will proceed to order the troops to rebuild Iraq. I will send the contractors home to the United States, but leave an offer for them to set up shop in Iraq once the work is done. This will ensure that the American government is in charge and not the economy. Iraq MUST be rebuilt, to restore bread and circus and make the people happy. Once they are happy, I will slowly return the democracy to full power, but the council will always be present. This plan will ensure the success of the US campaign in Iraq and will help promote the US economy.

I think the first thing to do would be to continue to train, equip and work with the Iraqi military and police. Long term we can only try to get them to either settle the internal differences peacefully, let it dissolve into three countries or form a confederation of the three. i would not set a time table for withdrawal because that does just give the separatist and other fighters a reason to sit back relax and wait until we are gone to start on each other. Militarily we have to continue what we are doing now, politically we have to convince the Iraqi factions that they need to clean house of the radicals within each group and start to work together for everyone's good. The military side is easy but the political side is the hard one. People forget that it took ten years after the Revolutionary War for us to write and ratify the Constitution; they could do it faster if they copied ours but that is not what they want or understand.

I know the war is unpopular, but that is not important. I support the war, but relieze the people are getting tired. If I was president I would have to stay in until the job was finished. I know you are all thinking, I'm a nut job and will give me a thumbs down lol but we can't pull out. If we pull out Iraq, will collapse on itself, and the civil war will tear its self apart. Foreign influences like Iran will interfere, and Kurdish revolts may get turkey involved. By staying in, we do the right thing. We stay to help these people stabilize, and bring back credit to out country. I do think as time goes on we can withdraw troops, and take on a secondary role to the Iraqi security forces. I would also make sure to get rivals parties talking, because peace can only come by diplomacy. An open diaolgue is key.

I would spend all my time and effort to get troops withdrawn and give the country a decent working structure. Then I would get Bush and Cheney sent to prison for their hopeless actions that have caused the deaths of thousands of innocent lives on both sides.
