I have Mercury car insurance and I pay for ful coverage, I just totaled my 12 month old Camry and now my agent is telling me that I do not have access to a rental car, that the only way to get ono under my contract is if the vehicle was stolen. Is there anyone that can help because I think i'm getting ripped off and don't have a clue on what to do next. I really appreciate your time, thank you.

You are not being ripped off. There are a couple of companies that include car rental in their policy but most do not. I have been an agent for years and everytime I offer the coverage to someone they always turn it down. I quit offering and include it in my quote. Under an insurance contract if your vehicle is stolen, after so many hours they will provide you with a rental vehicle. It is to late now but it would be a good idea so go in and review your policy. Make sure that you go over all of your coverages and ask your agent about any additional coverages that may be available.

Yes, well, "full coverage" means 10 different things to 10 different people, and it frequently does NOT include rental car coverage. Not all car insurance companies OFFER rental car coverage on their policies, and if you're under 21, it's kinda pointless to get it, because no one is going to rent to you ANYWAY.

That rental theft coverage, only kicks in 48 hours AFTER the car has been stolen, anyway.

You're not getting ripped off. You just didn't buy "rental coverage".

If indeed your vehicle is totaled, and only the insurance company can say that with any certainty, if you have full coverage you will get the fair market value of the vehicle at the time of loss, adjusted for condition, and less any deductible. Coverage for a rental car when you have caused the loss is not connected with full coverage, but is a separate add on provision. Did you add it on when you got your policy? There is also GAP insurance that would pay the difference between the fair market value and what you owe if the car is financed, but unless you signed up for it, you won't get that either.

It's not a rip off when they won't pay you benefits you didn't accept, sign up for, and pay for on your policy.

If you do not pay for rental coverage then you do not have rental coverage. Rental and Towing are optional coverages. This is a common mistake, most people do not realize that "Full coverage" only means comprehensive and collision. Most people think it means every coverage available.

As far as the theft is concerned, your policy is probably written that the comprehensive coverage will cover a rental if your vehicle is stolen.
